KEV KICKS OFF

- With Kevin Ellis

I HAVE got to say the Scarlets were outstanding beating Leinster in Ireland. The win was even better as they had a player, Steff Evans, sent off for a tip-tackle which I think was not a red card. They played all the second half with 14 men and fair play to Scarlets, confidence is high and their defence was outstanding. It’s great to see a Welsh region make the Pro12 final.

Munster will take on the Scarlets in the Pro12 final after beating a lacklustre Ospreys. Munster were the more dominant team and were clinical in most of their attack and deserved the win. Ospreys massively missed talisman Rhys Webb who pulled out with a groin injury. Let’s hope the injury heals and he’ll be raring to go on that Lions tour.

Last Friday I went up to watch the regional youth cup final in Ystrad Mynach, Bridgend Athletic v Rumney, an Ospreys v Blues final. It was a fantastic, free-flowing game which the Athletic won but credit to Rumney, they played well too.

Tondu lost to a good, strong forward pack of Rhydyfelin in the final of the Silver Ball at the Bridgendford Brewery Field. Tondu have had a fantastic season and should be very proud of getting promotion and getting to the final but unfortunately weren’t good enough on the day. They can now rest up and try and recruit for a higher level of rugby next year.

Congratulations to Merthyr on winning the Premiership final over Aberavon in the Talbot Athletic ground. There was some controversy at the end as Merthyr were down to 13 men with eight minutes to go and a prop went down injured so the game went to passive scrums and Merthyr held on to win, similar to what happened to Wales in Six Nations. Maybe somebody needs to change some rules! QUESTION: Why do you think Ospreys have lost the last six out of seven games since March?

I honestly think their squad is not strong enough. They need more strength in depth so if there are injuries or Wales call-ups they can cover with quality players. I think the Scarlets are showing the way with top quality performances and a quality squad with good strength in depth.
