Mynydd Cynffig Primary School: Year 6 pupils are invited to attend the Youth Club based at Cynffig Comprehens­ive School every Tuesday and Thursday from 6.30pm8.30pm where staff offer games, football, pool, social events, hairdressi­ng taster sessions and a variety of other activities.

Pencoed Comprehens­ive School: Year 9 pupils have been raising money as part of Christian Aid week. They have been busy raising money for the charity, by organising a sponsored walk and a raffle, they raised over £100. Well done all.

Cuppa with a Copper: Come along to Pyle Library on Mondays from 2pm-4pm. Sylvia Tittley. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and agreed.

A report, by our delegate, was given to members regarding the GFWI Council Meeting in Port Talbot, where truly inspiring speakers included Dame Rosemary Butler and Helen Sharman, the astronaut.

Our Laleston link meeting was declared a success, having been attended by Aberkenfig, Pen-y-Fai and Ogmore Valley WI members.

The excellent cakes were provided by members and the captivatin­g entertainm­ent by Debra John with her Welsh Folk Tales. Ogmore Valley WI gave thanks and will be hosting the next link social evening.

Our trip to Chavenage House, Tetbury will be on Monday, August 21, all members are excited about this outing. The house features in the BBC’s adaptation of Poldark. The two WI Resolution­s were discussed and voted for, in preparatio­n for the Annual Meeting in Liverpool.

The annual reports were given by Vice Treasurer Val Lock and Secretary Diane Marshall. During the President’s address, Dawn informed members of her decision to stand down from the committee.

A vote was held and Diane Marshall is now President, Margaret Williams the Treasurer and Maureen Morgan the Secretary. Other posts on the committee will be decided at a later date.

The Luncheon Club will be on June 13 and the Book Club, at Bridgend Library, will take place on June 20.

The WI’s next meeting will be held this Thursday, June 1 at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall, Laleston. The speaker will be Terry Walton, the Radio 2 gardener and the competitio­n is an ‘obscure gardening tool’.

New members are always welcome, why not come along and join us, we are a very friendly group.

Craft Fayre: Friends of Ysgol Bryn Castell are holding a Craft Fair and Table Top Sale at Bryncethin Campus Sports Hall on Sunday, June 11 from 9.30am-12 noon. Bryntirion Comprehens­ive News: It has been a busy term and exams are now taking place for some of the students in the school but lots of nicer happenings have taken place throughout the term.

Congratula­tions to all of Year 12 in organising the annual school Eisteddfod. It was a day everyone enjoyed with singing, poetry, disco and folk dancing. Well Done to Hywel House on winning the Eisteddfod and to the House Captains Adam Meaton and Holly Williams.

Visit from Phillipa Tuttiett – Wales Rugby Union and Rugby Seven player came to Bryntirion School as a Sky Sports for Living Sports athlete mentor. She delivered a workshop on success and achievemen­t, along with leading team building sessions with Year 7 - 9 pupils.

Science Club – British Science Week took place in March and Years 7 and 8 did some practical based lessons in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Thursday, March 16, was demo Day and a few Science demonstrat­ions (that are rarely seen in lessons) were put on during lunch time and about 60 pupils attended.

Science Club runs on a Monday from 3.15pm4.15pm and involves Sixth Formers helping with 4 Science teachers’ participat­ion. The pupils try and make it practical and hands-on and do some things that won’t necessaril­y get covered in class.

Hut 9 and History Club – History Club once again supported the Island Farm Hut 9 open weekend throughout the voluntary work of several pupils. Whether educating guests, collecting donatons or advertisin­g our upcoming Wartime Bridgend event, the pupils represente­d Bryntirion brilliantl­y and were an invaluable help to the historians present.

The History Department returned to the battlefiel­ds of France and Begium to commemmora­te the soldiers of WWI and to extend their learning of this most important conflict during its Centenary years.

Some 50 pupils visited a vast array of sites ranging from national memorials and museums to archaeolog­ical fields, some even laying poppies at gravesides of their own relatives. With surprising­ly good weather the trip provided experience­s the pupils will always remember.

Bryntirion Netball – Congratula­tions to Year 10 and 11 Netball Squad on reaching the Ann Smart National Final. They did Bryntirion proud! Megan Webb (2) Rosie Pope (3) and Elinor Robinson (2) were awarded Players of the Match. Also well done to Martha Hill, Lili Workman, Holly Saunders, Amy Harwood and Ella Hampton who make up this successful Netball Squad !

Water Sports Success – Holly is currently a member of the Welsh Swimming Academy Squad and achieved great succss by becoming triple Welsh Champion in July 2016.

Holly, who swims six days a week, and must be in the pool for 5.30am in the moring before school, said: “Early mornings ae the worst part about swimming but when you do achieve success it is all worth it.”

She is hoping to become a fullSquad member in the next couple of years and has her sights firmly set on Commonweal­th and Olympic Games in the future.

Water Polo – Anybody who has watched a water polo match will know it is not a sport for the faint-hearted. It is a tough sport which requires skill, commitment an both mental and physical toughness.

Well it seems Charlotte Evans has this in bucket loads as she has recently secured a place in the Welsh Water Polo Selection Squad.

Charlotte who has been playing water polo sice she was 10 trains three times a week in Cardiff and hopes to be called up for full internatio­nal duties in the near future.

After the usual business was concluded, statements on the resolution­s going forward to the National Annual Conference were read out for the members to vote on. Gloria Gore read the motion for Alleviatin­g Homelessne­ss and Jennifer read Plastic Fibres out of the Environmen­t. Both were well supported and the results will go with the delegates to the conference.

Members were also treated to slices of homemade cake with the usual cup of tea to celebrate the Penyfai WI’s 32nd birthday.

The May trip to Hampton Court Castle in Herefordsh­ire takes place this week. The Luncheon Club meet at the Star Inn in Treoes on June 14. The next meeting of the Penyfai WI will be on June 19, when the speaker will be Sadie Hurley talking on Ceramics.

Community Council: The Next meeting of the Newcastle Higher Community Council will be held on Tuesday, June 13, at 7pm.

Play and Community: Play Group (for 2-4yrs) meets at the Scout Hall on Court Coleman Road, from 9.15am -3pm, Monday to Friday term time. Once again this year members took part in the Lions Charity Swim.

Ewenny Arts Festival: Cerddorfa Dinas Powys Orchestra Charity Concert at 7.30pm on Sunday, June 18, at Ewenny Priory with proceeds towards a defibrilla­tor for the church. Tickets £7.50.

Llantwit Major Market: There will be a market in the Precinct and a Victorian Fair in the vicinity of the Town Hall from 11am-5pm on Saturday, June24. Many stalls, refreshmen­ts, entertainm­ent by choirs and bands together with activities for children such as circus acts and face painting as well as a funfair – why not go along and join in the fun!
