LLEWELLYN Matthews will again compete in this season’s Amateur Championship that is being staged on June 19 – 24 at Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent.

Last summer Englishman Scott Gregory triumphed during the 121st staging of the event at Royal Porthcawl.

It will be the 14th occasion for Royal St George’s to stage The Amateur Championship – and a first time since 2006.

The event 11 years ago was won by Frenchman Julien Guerrier who beat Adam Gee (Leatherhead) 4 & 3 in the traditional 36hole final.

Though Matthews is currently laid low with a virus, he hopes to be fighting fit next month to tackle the Open Championship course in the Garden of England.

Meanwhile, five pars were worth their weight in gold to Marcus Goldsworthy last Saturday during a White Box Medal event.

He got out on the golf course before the worst of light rain and a strengthening wind set in, and shot 86-16-70.

Runner-up Gavin Embling carded the low gross score, firing 77-6-71, with birdies on holes six and nine along with eight pars.

Carl Brown got third spot on countback with 93-20-73 from Allan Jenkins 90-17-73 and Nicholas Golunski 83-10-73.

Also riding high on the scoreboard were Paul Brabban 83-8-75, Brian Marling 81-6-75, Mike Bull 85-10-75, D Lewis 87-11-76, J Kelly 89-13-76 and Mark Wayne Beattie 85-9-76.

In the Welsh Ladies Amateur Championship in Wrexham, club member Georgia Lewis reached the matchplay stage before bowing out to defending champion Kath O’Connor (West Byfleet).

Back-to-back rounds of 81 for 162 secured Welsh international Georgia a tied 15th spot, and she met the top finisher in Kath O’Connor at the start of the Matchplay stage on Sunday.

And in a tight contest that could have gone either way, Georgia lost by two holes. 81-11-70.

Low gross round came from runner-up Thomas Furneaux with 72-1-71 (six birdies, including a two on the 15th).

Scrolling down the day one scores came John David 77-5-72, Patrick Carroll 88-16-72, Ronan Oliver 77-5-72, Sean David 81-8-73, Stephen Brown 80-6-74, Russell Jones 828-74, Gary Munro 78-4-74, Vince Pritchard 86-12-74, Justin Reed 77-3-74, David Saines 90-16-74.

Warm conditions on Sunday helped Cameron Morris on the way to 755-70 from Jordan Oliver 81-10-71 and Sean David 79-8-71.

Three players were locked on a low gross level of 74 with Ian Howells taking fourth spot via 742-72.

Further down the scoreboard came Tom Peet 76-3-73, Ronan Oliver 785-73, Jonathan Stone 774-73, Paul Maber 77-4-73, Stephen Bowen 84-11-73, Nick Ralph low gross 741-73, Nick Wootton 82-973, Jamie Jones low gross 74-1-73.
