Meanwhile, David Evans last week maintained a fine run of form to take a Senior May Medal competition.

Following a series of near misses in Senior Section events, he shot 94-2866 and managed to keep big numbers off his card.

A two on the eighth green and four pars helped runner-up Andrew Cox get 86-19-67 with Jonny McEachen going birdie on the sixth hole in 81-12-69.

But wet conditions only led to 33 members teeing it up and fourth place went to Glyn Jackman with 97-28-69 ahead of Irish star Philip Harrington 91-22-69.

Three players then finished on nett 70 blows – Mark Raybould 85-15-70, Nigel Phillips 87-17-70 and former Lakeside captain and the king of steady golf, Eddie D Taylor, with 92-22-70.

Low gross score of the day came from big-hitting Philip Weston who entered the Sam Bevan snug with 80-8-72 (birdies on sixth and home holes together with five pars).

A new driver failed to work wonders for another big-hitter, D R Stead, who could only punch 105-2184 out of his round.

Two other twos were recorded on the day and they came from former Maesteg star Dave Roderick (second hole) and golfing aficionado Michael Parker on the fourth green.

On the Ladies scene, despite three no-returns Julie Davies shot 35 points to lift a Midweek Stableford competition on countback from her chum Rebecca Roberts.

Third-placed Jill L Davies signed for 31 points, as did Julie Reade.

And the competition was garnished with a hole-in-one, as Geraint Jones aced the 154-yard 12th hole in round two.

He also went birdie on the 10th hole in amassing a winning score of 38 points to edge out master golfer Colin Rumbelow (12 pars six bogeys) by a mere point.

Third-placed Jason Thomas shot birdies on holes one and nine in scoring 37 points while Richard Ashman, Joseph Lacey and Neil Butcher all got beefy 35’s.

On the 34-point mark came six players – Jeremy Oliver, Norman Williams, Richie Cliffe, Michael Wilson, Michael Abbott and Wesley Edwards.

On the Senior scene at the club, Terry Dowrick returned to form with a bang last week in winning the Balls competition.

The former Margam cricket star shot par 36 Stableford points to sustain the challenge of Joseph Lacey by just one point.

Third-place honours went to Tony Kelham, who signed for 34 points.

Last week the Chibuluma Trophy (a bonus bogey competition) was up for grabs and it went to Keith Griffiths, who carded 18 pluses – one more than hot property Michael Scully. Steve Ryan with 81-13-68, who escaped from Alcatraz (hole10) with a prize two, and he also matched par on nine occasions.

In the Ladies Club Championship, Joan Smith carded a gross 84 to finish two shots in front of Kath McGrath with Sarah Rees on 92, Kathy Northam 93 and Ruth Lane 98.
