Doubles delight for college teams

FOOTBALL

BRIDGEND College Football Academy last week completed a superb double at first and second team levels, writes Tony Poole.

The Pencoed-based Academy had already seen their first and second teams achieve Welsh Colleges league honours.

However, both teams also made it through to the Gap Personnel Premier League Cup finals staged at the Cyncoed campus of Cardiff Metropolitan University.

And while the Bridgend College senior team carded a 4-2 victory over Coleg Menai Academy, the second team won the day 5-1 against Cardiff & Vale College (CAVC).

Josh Morgan gave Bridgend the lead against Menai while a wonder strike from Liam Snowden doubled the lead.

Llantwit Major star Connor Goldsworthy was then heavily involved in their third goal.

A pinpoint corner from the former Penybont player found Keane Thomas, who duly headed home.

Cameron Keetch got their fourth goal and although the North Wales side twice responded late on, it was Bridgend’s day in the capital city sun.

Coleg Menai Academy said via their official Twitter account: “It wasn’t to be for us on the day against an excellent Bridgend College team.’’

Against CAVC in the second team final, Bridgend were in the box seat once Connor Dando gave them the lead.

Soon after Penybont star Ben Symons squared the ball for Lewis Brown to make it 2-0 – and they went on to close out a comfortable victory.

“It took a huge effort from both players and coaches to achieve Welsh Colleges doubles, and everyone is to be congratulated on a memorable season,” said Bridgend College Sports Lecturer Jason Bekker.

The much-travelled footballer and former Coed-y-Mwstwr golf star continued: “Both were tough finals, and we certainly had to work hard to get the wins.

“But they are a terrific bunch of boys, who ultimately proved that effort and performance is reflected on the scoreboard.’’
