Performanc­es get festival off to a great start

THE 2017 Gwyl Maesteg Festival has kicked off with performanc­es by The Cory Band and the Dance Collaborat­ion Show at Maesteg Town Hall.

Ranked as the best brass band in the world, The Cory Band gave an uplifting and rousing performanc­e to a full house on Saturday.

They were supported by Beverley Humphreys who hosted the evening along with Katy Treharne, a profession­al soprano who trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. The evening’s arrangemen­t was compiled by the band’s musical director Philip Harper, with Maesteg’s own Ryan Woods supporting Katy on the piano.

‘The Remarkable Life of Roald Dahl’ was narrated by Beverley Humphries, with accompanyi­ng music played by the band.

Three Maesteg Dance groups, with members aged from four to 17, took part in Dance Collaborat­ion on Sunday. They were Funk Force, UDC and Contagious

A full two-hour dance spectacula­r was presented by the three groups, with around 400 people watching, and it proved to be a high impact and energetic evening. Other events include: The Maesteg Art Society exhibition at Maesteg Town Hall until June 24

Senior Citizens’ Afternoon Tea today from 1pm at Maesteg Town Hall. Entertainm­ent provided by local school choirs and tickets cost £3.50

Tomorrow, June 8, a Heritage Walk and Talk with Roy Meredith starts at the council offices at 1pm. It’s free and there are refreshmen­ts.

Stereophon­ics tribute, Stereophon­ish, are live at Maesteg Town Hall on Friday from 7.30pm. Advance tickets cost £3.50 or £5.50 on the door

The Family Festival Fun Day takes place on Saturday at Maesteg Market Square.
