Maesteg junior golfers take the top honours

TWO Maesteg Junior members last week won notable awards in different competitio­ns.

Ellis Williams shot a gross round of 75 at Tredegar Park last Wednesday to lift the South Wales U15 Boys Championsh­ip by three shots.

And the following day it was the turn of Joseph Lewis to heap more honours on the Llynfi Valley club.

He shot a 64 in the Junior Neath Bell to triumph in the best nett category.

On the domestic scene, Les Jackson won the weekly Senior Section event from Les Williams and Dennis Francis.

And Alun Rees led Maesteg to a 3-0 victory over Builth Wells in the South Wales Senior Classic, and they will now travel to Neath in the next round.

In the Wayfarers weekly competitio­n, Jeff Simmons returned with a bang, pipping Brian Thatcher on a 35-point countback.

Dennis Francis and Geraint Davies tied third on the 33-point mark, and Rob Lloyd took the correspond­ing nine-holer with a toasty 21 points.

There was a victory for Maesteg Halletts in the Glamorgan County Plate over Morlais Castle while 83 members teed it up in the Peter Morgan Memorial Trophy. The popular winner on a 41-point countback was club captain Jonathan Thomas from Aled Jenkins.

Countback was also called on to decide third spot - Stuart Hall edged out Nick Roberts after both players carded 40 points.

Meanwhile, last Sunday Tom Williams shot a gross 68 to win the Qualifying Cup for a sixth time – runner-up Morgan Griffiths was four shots adrift.

COED-Y-MWSTWR

RICHARD T Commander again took command last week to pocket the Senior Club Championsh­ip at Coed-y-Mwstwr.

He carded the low gross round of 76-11-65 with birdies on the seventh and home holes that complement­ed nine pars.

But wet conditions early on led to just 44 members teeing it up with Jimmy Blackball on cue in a runner-up 87-20-67.

Third-placed Barry Lewis shot birdies on holes one and three during a great start, but after that the only joy he got was nine pars in 76-8-68.

Hot Porthcawl property Dave Evans was fourth with 100-28-72 and holein-one maestro Barrie Rowlands entered the Sam Bevan snug with 9725-72.

Mark Raybould shot six pars on an 87-15-72 card for sixth spot while golfing aficionado Michael Parker carded 89-16-73 and Gerald Bush 87-14-73.

A popular score on the day was nett 74 via six players – Philip Davies 91-17-74, Glyn Price 9925-74, Richard McCann 98-24-74, Philip Weston 82-8-74, Gerald Howe 9622-74 and George R Davis 99-25-74.

The card of Philip Davies, however, was the most remarkable of the day, as it contained a Tritu (twos on three holes).

They came on the fourth, 11 and 17th greens, but the bad news came through sevens on the seventh, ninth and 10th holes.

Just one other tournament two was registered – Peter Beynon holed out for a birdie on the eighth green.

Meanwhile, Coed-yMwstwr Halletts are going great guns with victories last week in both the Glamorgan League and Cup.

On the league scene, they won 4-0 at Whitchurch with Geoffrey Evans and Stephen McAllen gaining a stellar 6 & 5 victory.

Michael Jacques and Ross Haskin triumphed 3 & 2; Jerry Devine and Matthew Carpenter ham- mered a 2 & 1 win while Stuart Taylor and Sammy Slennett were one up.

In the Glamorgan County Halletts Cup, the Bryn Road boys made it through the quarter-final stage on the back of a 3-1 home win over Pyle & Kenfig.

The two home victories were carded by Evans and McAllen along with Devine and Carpenter, who both nailed 4 & 3 wins.

Jacques and Haskins finished all square while Nigel Key and Sammy Slennett came from two down with two to play to tie.

Last Saturday, Keith Carpenter chiselled 8621-65 to nail the June Medal competitio­n at the club.

A three over the tall trees on number 16 set up the win, as did matching par on 10 occasions.

Low gross score came from runner-up Gary Dowling (71-5-66) with a two on hole four; birdies on the sixth and 15th holes together with 11 pars.

Other fine Division One rounds came from Stephen Hesketh third with 79-13-66, seventhpla­ced Stephen Thomas 82-11-71, Darren Yates (eighth via 85-14-71) and ninth-place finisher Steve O’Connell (79-8-71).

The Division Two winner and fourth overall was Simon J Slennett, who shot 86-18-68 from fifthplace­d Keith Russell 9122-69, Stephen Morgan sixth with 87-16-71 and Dave Osborn who fired 91-20-71 for 10th position.

Just five counts of two were carded on the day, and the others came from Stephen Thomas and Wayne Williams (both hole four), Richard T Commander (eighth) and Barry Lewis (11th).

On the Ladies scene, Rebecca Roberts, mother of mini-monster ball mincer Mali, secured a second win since returning to the game this year.

She triumphed in a Midweek Medal with winning numbers of 85-1372 containing a birdie on hole two and five pars.

Runner-up Caroline E Tremlett also shot a superb birdie with a two on the penultimat­e hole, and recorded five pars in 9013-77.

Julie Davies got a two on hole eight on the way to 93-15-78 and third spot while Jill L Davies shot an identical score that contained three pars.

The other sub-80 nett score on the day came from fifth-placed Jackie Summerton (102-23-79).

The correspond­ing Saturday event was won by Julie Davies, who shot the low gross score of 91-1576 (seven pars), from Sian Hooper (109-32-77).
