Brown leads the way

EXCEPTIONA­L scoring lit up the Nick Ellis Trophy at Southerndo­wn on Bank Holiday Monday.

Mark Brown led the way with a sizzling nett 60 that saw him birdie the 12th hole and match par 11 times on a winning card of 75-15-60.

Runner-up Murat Coskun signed for 76-15-61, and he birdied the 13th and 15th holes and got nine pars.

And a remarkable round came from young Daniel Jakeway who secured third spot on the strength of 67-562.

He shot an eagle on the par-five sixth hole; sunk a putt for two on the fifth green and recorded further birdies on holes one, four, eight, nine and 13 to place alongside seven pars.

The other top-10 finishers were Philip Monoghan 739-64, Glyn B Jones 77-12-65 (13 pars), C Embling 79-1465, Glen Webber 78-12-66, Brian Marling 74-6-68, Gareth Standing 69-1-68 and low gross scorer Kieron Harman 66+2 = 68.

The Harman card contained five birdies and 12 pars along with a bogey on the home hole.

Last weekend a White Box Stableford was staged that Miles Thomas won with 41 points (eight pars).

Two points back came Lewis Phillips (11 pars, six bogeys and a double-bogey) with third-placed D J Smith signing for 38 points (two birdies and nine pars).

Another fine round from young Daniel Jakeway saw him get 37 points (two birdies, 11 pars and five bogeys).

On the 37-point level came Michael Phillips and S Forman (two on the 14th) while four competitor­s achieved par 36 – J Keddle (four bird- ies), Brian Marling (two on the 10th), Howard Thomas (two birdies) and Mark Jennings (two on the 10th).

In the final Hanner Ffordd competitio­n in May, John Lord carded five pars in sweeping to victory on 40 Stableford points.

He finished four points clear of G Stephens with Alan Jarvis and Dr G W Phillips both a further point back.

On the 34-point mark came A J Vigar and B Dudley and they finished one point clear of six competitor­s – Viv Sheppard (two on hole 10), T Grant, Bill Goldsworth­y, H J Harris and Dr G Hapgood. par on 11 occasions.

However, he had to survive the lottery that is countback to see off his brother Tom, who got birdies on holes two, five, eight, nine and 18 plus nine pars on his card.

Elliot Watkins was third with 41 points (birdie on nine and six pars), and he finished three points in front of Ronan Oliver (five birdies and eight pars).

Keiron Tantum got a two on the 12th hole and went birdie on the fifth in shooting 37 points for fifth place while further down the scoreboard came Jordan Oliver and Ioan Consitt with par rounds of 36 points and Brodi Lewis (35).

Meanwhile, Pyle & Kenfig are staging a Girls Golf Clinic on August 13 (11am – 3pm).

Last Saturday, the White Bowl and Billa David event was held with Nigel Jones taking the honours on 39 Stableford points.

He went birdie on holes three and 10 and also matched par five times to edge out Barrie Stephens on countback.

Though Stephens got three birdies, he rued a no-return on hole 14, and finished one point in front of Stephen Brown (two on the fourth and birdie on nine).

Fourth-placed Ioan L Consitt got 37 points (four birdies); on the same mark came Phil Morgan, and Nigel Morgan got par 36.

Two 35-point finishers carded eagles with Neil Jordan holing out on the 11th green, and Neil B Morgan on the fifth.

The other 35-point men were John Davis, Simon Willis, Tom Peet (four birdies), Dave Williams, Gary Munro (two on the sixth), Rhys Evans, Graham Evans and Philip W Jones.
