75, 71 and 67 for an even par final score of 213.

The two Evian qualifiers – Isabelle Boineau (France) and Johanna Gustavsson (Sweden) - both finished on seven under par 206.

During the two opening rounds, Lydia played in the same group as Isabelle Boineau, who last year won the Scottish Women’s Open at Dundonald Links.

Earlier in the week, Lydia moved on to the Buckinghamshire club in an attempt to qualify for the 72nd US Women’s Open.

This year the event is being staged on July 13 at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, with Texan Brittany Lang defending champion.

Other US qualifying tournaments were also being held in 21 sites in the USA along with China, Japan and Korea.

The number of qualifiers from the European qualifier at the Buckinghamshire event – involving 36 holes of Strokeplay - was being determined on the day.

WELSH OPEN YOUTHS:

MATTHEW Roberts (Vale Resort) tied third in the Welsh Open Youths tournament staged last weekend in Prestatyn.

Rounds of 67, 72, 72 and 74 for a three-under par score of 285 left him five shots behind wire-towi re winner Max Martin of the Ladbrook Park club in Solihull.

He shot rounds of 64, 70, 69 and 77 for 280 while just one shot behind came Tom Williams (Wrexham).

Another Vale Resort youngster, Oliver Brown, was tied 29th on 299 while Ronan Oliver (Pyle & Kenfig) failed by 10 shots to make the halfway cut that came on a fiveover par 149.

ROYAL PORTHCAWL:

COUNTBACK was called on last Saturday to determine the winner of a June Medal competition at Royal Porthcawl.

And number-crunching led to Paul Hullah being declared the winner ahead of former Welsh Senior champion Jeffrey Thomas.

Hullah shot 73-3-70 and Thomas signed for 70-0-70, and they finished one shot in front of two former rugby stars – Bleddyn Taylor 76-5-71 and Rhodri Lewis 77-671.

Also riding high on the scoreboard were Robert Atkin 88-16-72, Anthony Jenkins 78-6-72, Philip Matthews 89-14-75, Steve Bull 82-7-75, Elwyn Roberts 89-13-76, Michael Cahill 83-6-77 and David Tucker 84-7-77.

On the Ladies scene, Julia Baker rose to the occasion last week in scoring 33 points off an away handicap to win a Stableford event.

A two on the seventh hole helped her along the way, as did matching six times.

Runner-up Heather Atkin, also off an away handicap, came in with 32 points and her round contained six pars.

Jane Maine was third with 30 points, finishing one point in front of Pam Williams, who birdied the second and 16th holes.

Meanwhile, Scott Gregory who in 2016 won the 121st staging of the Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl just failed to make the halfway cut last week on the PGA Tour.

The 22-year-old from Waterlooville in Hampshire has remained in the amateur ranks, and continues to play out of the Corhampton club.

But last week he teed it up on the PGA Tour in The Memorial tournament at Muirfield Village – home of golfing legend Jack Nicklaus.

However, rounds of 76 and 72 for a four over par 148 saw him miss the halfway cut by just one shot.
