FOOTBALL

KANE Owen was last week crowned Player of the Year during the Penybont Annual Presentation Night staged in the clubhouse, writes Tony Poole.

The decision on top award of the night was left to Bont boss Rhys Griffiths, and it was richly deserved as left-back Owen possesses arguably the sweetest left peg in Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One.

Owen arrived at the Kymco Stadium last year from Aberystwyth Town, and simply got better as the season unfolded.

His ability to turn defence into attack and pinpoint service at set-pieces made him a firm favourite with the home faithful.

Two awards were made to Josef Hopkins, who really stepped up to the plate last season after been given a more attacking role by new Bont chief Griffiths.

He acted as a superb foil for strike partner Marcus Griffiths and it led to Hopkins getting a sweet 16 goals.

It was against this background that he received both Players’ Play and Supporters Club silverware.

The winner Golden was Boot Marcus Griffiths, who last winter terrorised Division One defences, hitting the back of the net on 22 occasions.

Goal of the Season went to 12-goal hitman Cullen Kinsella for a November 5 cracker from 35 metres in the 3-0 win over Barry Town United at Jenner Park in the J D Welsh Cup.

Bleddyn Webster got Young Player of the Year, and Chairman Emlyn Phillips gave his annual award to Nigel Jordan.

Clubman of the Year was club director Mike Baroth for the sterling work he is performing behind the scenes in inching the Bridgend super club closer towards an FAW Domestic Licence.

And 20 years of dedicated service to football from ex-Pencoed and Cefn Cribwr rugby star Lyndon Borge was duly recognised.

The football convert has worked tirelessly with young players long before Penybont was launched back in 2013.

Next week the Glamorgan Gazette will include coverage of Penybont Ladies Presentation Evening while a corresponding function for the Second, Third and Development teams is being staged in the clubhouse a week on Friday.
