Charity has helped over 120 young people in past year

- TOM HOUGHTON

A MAESTEG charity says it has helped 122 local young people reach their potential over the past year.

Yellow Wales launched their annual impact report this week, which emphasised how they have helped to change young lives in the area.

Hosted by Hafod Housing, the charity specialises in providing training and support, mainly for 16 to 25-year-olds, and has helped the 122 people access training, volunteering opportunities, further education and employment.

The charity says of these, 47 have achieved nationally recognised qualifications, seven have successfully found employment and all have gained self-confidence and vital life skills.

Activities have included fire and road safety awareness with Maesteg Fire Station, a challenging two-day indoor climbing course, student placements and football tournaments.

Steve Driscoll, Yellow Wales’ manager, launched the Impact Report at the charity’s Annual General Meeting on June 8.

He said: “We work with a broad spectrum of young people but specialise in engaging and supporting those who face significant personal challenges in their lives and it’s so rewarding to mark their achievements.

“We have helped them develop key life skills, gain accredited qualifi- cations, whilst working hard to help learners increase their self-confidence and make best use of their talents. We also want to thank our numerous partners who help support our work in the community.”

One of those partners is Sported, one of the leading sport for development charities in the UK, and their chief executive, Chris Grant, travelled down from London to speak at the event.

Chris said: “At Sported, we support more than 3,000 amazing community clubs and groups across the whole of the UK, who are using the power of sport to transform the lives of young people facing challenges of many kinds.

“What Yellow Wales are doing is a brilliant example of this work.

“I was proud and delighted to join them at their AGM to celebrate their work, and the achievements of the young people they’re working with.”
