COED-Y-MWSTWR

-

KIRK Norris and Julian Rudd swept to victory on 44 Stableford points in the Jan Bekker Greensomes Cup at Coed-yMwstwr.

The tournament perpetuates the memory of the popular and iconic golfer and footballer, who did so much to put the Bryn Road club on the golfing map during its infancy around the turn of the Millennium.

Runners-up two points in arrears were Steve O’Connell and his uncle Rory O’Connell with two duos closing on 40 points – Simon Lake and Sean Boga-Lake together with Nathan Alexander and Jonny Cox.

On the 39-point level were three pairings – Graham Caswell and Nigel Key, Brian Day and Andrew Goss along with Alex Hampson and Steve Turner.

Last weekend, Philip Davies shot to victory in a June Stableford tournament with 41 points.

The ex-Welsh rugby referee go a birdie on the uphill 14th hole to place alongside eight pars – and his winning card even contained two noreturns.

A countback victory came at the expense of Jamie Williams with the fluctuating fortunes of the 25-handicapper reflected in a two on the eighth green; eight pars and three blobs.

Third-placed Luke Morgan got 39 points, one more than Matt Phillips, while four men signed for 37 points – Lloyd Dowling (Tutu – twos on holes four and 17), Anthony Main, Glenn James and Jimmy Woods.

Par 36 came from Raymond Hapgood, steady Eddie D Taylor, Chris Wilson and Andy Hill.

Earlier in the month, those who still had their hats on doffed them to Colin Edwards after he lifted a Senior Stableford event in wild and windy conditions.

Despite failing to score on holes three and five, mad hatter Edwards carded four key pars to sign for par 36 points.

One point back, runnerup William Jones got a two on the 11th hole and three pars, but like most competitors on the day three no-returns held him back.

Third-placed Jimmy Blackball was once more on cue – this time he also potted 35 points as did Dai Roderick – while putting genius Michael Joyce and Andrew Cox signed for 34 points.

Seventh-place Dave Evans collected 32 along with Terrence Haggerty to finish one in front of four competitors – Dai (Maesteg) Thomas, beach boy Barrie Delaney, Irish star Philip Harrington and Senior Captain David B Ford-Williams.

The only other two that the 38 members who teed it up could manage came from Geoffrey Jones, who sunk a birdie putt on the par-three eighth hole.

Last week John Jones and canny Scot Andy Logan teamed up to win the Brian Manning Pairs with a sizzling score of 79 points.

Four points in arrears were golfing aficionado Michael Parker and Richard T Commander with Jonny McEachen and John Rogers third on the back of 74 points.

But surprisingly two big hitters, David E BayStead and Alan Donovan, brought up the rear with 43 points.

Meanwhile, Coed-yMwstwr Halletts gained a 3-1 victory over Bargoed in wet conditions out on the Bryn Road golf course.

It kept them in striking distance of Glamorgan League pacemakers Rhondda in what is proving another good campaign.

The flagship victory came from Paul Reed and Matthew Carpenter, who nailed a 5 & 3 win, with Michael Jacques and Sammy Slennett victorious 2 & 1.

Nigel Key and Mark Seldon walked-over while Clive Reeves and Ross Haskins lost on the final hole after three-putting.

The Ladies Section recently held the Centenary Greensomes with Rebecca Roberts and her chum Julie Davies carding a comfortable victory on 42 points.

They finished seven points clear of Nicola Hopkins and Caroline E Tremlett while in third spot on the 29-point mark came Denise James and Jacqueline Summerton.

Fourth position was taken by Gaynor Ashman and Jackie Summerton on 27 points.

Last Saturday, Nicola Hopkins mounted the victory rostrum following a victory in the Severnside Cup with a sparkling 38 points.

A birdie on hole six and four pars did the trick for her and she had one point in hand over Sian Hooper.

Third-placed Jill L Davies got a four on the 10th hole and seven pars in a 35-point return while Caroline E Tremlett got a two on hole 11 in signing for 34 points.
