NINE players recorded nett rounds under 70 during a Yellow Box Medal last weekend at Southerndo­wn.

The tournament was taken by TD Edwards whose round of 78-13-65 contained a two on hole 10; further birdies on the 13th and 17th greens together with six pars.

Low gross scorer was runner-up Jake Hapgood with 64+2 = 66, and his sizzling card displayed eagle on the 13th, six birdies, nine pars and two bogeys.

Three birdies were on the card of third-place R Brookes (78-12-66) while S Simmonite got a two on the 10th in 75-8-67.

Nathan Chilcott shot 69-1-68 for fifth spot courtesy of three birdies, 13 pars and two bogeys and the others who went under nett 70 were Huw Jakeway 81-12-69, Jeremy Martin Smith 8213-69 (two on the 14th), Kieron Harman 67+2 = 69 (eight birdies, six pars, three bogeys and a double-bogey) and D Hart 8112-69.

Earlier in the month, Paul Porter staged a successful Captain’s Day, aided by Wayne Griffiths of Nathaniel Car Sales.

Jonathan Phillips took the Singles with 38 Stableford points, finishing one point in front of Ian Meredith.

John Ellis, Chris Cadogan and Robert Board all achieved par 36 points while best gross score of the day came from Kieron Harman on the strength of 71.

There were four Nearest the Pin prizes and they were scooped by Glen Webber (fifth), Phil Reed (seventh), Richard Board (10th) and Dave Newton (14th).

John Wilkinson smoked one off the tee down the 11th to take the Longest Drive in the 15-handicap and above while in the 14 and below section the winner down the home fairway was Nathan Chilcott.

A Fourball Better- ball Competitio­n was also staged, and the winners were Chris and Dennis Morgan with 41 points.

One point back came Carl Brown and Brian Marling with Kevin James and Mark Long third on a countback 38 points.

On the same mark were fourth-placed finishers Russell Brookes and Andrew Pentith, and the score was also on the cards of Matthew and Tom Goldsworth­y.

And the toasty putter of Josh Goode set up a victory for him in the Putting Challenge.

Meanwhile, Jake Hapgood tied 15th in the Aberconwy Trophy over 72 holes.

Hapgood shot rounds of 77, 76, 73, 81 for 307 while Oliver Brown (Vale Resort) was tied 11th on 304 blows.

Last week Southerndo­wn recorded a whitewash 5-0 victory over Peterstone Lakes in the Welsh Team Championsh­ip at the Brynhill club in Barry.

Having beaten Pontypridd at Creigiau in the previous round, 4-1, they were led home by Kieron Harman, who won 8 & 7, while his brother Kyle triumphed 7 & 6.

Jake Hapgood was equally impressive winning 5& 4; Nathan Chilcott got home 3 & 1 and Owen Greenow was two up.
