KEV KICKS OFF

- With Kevin Ellis

THE All Blacks were superb and thoroughly deserved their 30-15 victory at Eden Park. They played some great rugby and their offloading game had the Lions on the back foot most of the game and it’s scary because I think the All Blacks are going to get better. Their skill levels were far superior to the Lions’ and they play a fast, high tempo game which blew the Lions away. Their half backs are world class and dictate the tempo of the game. I thought Rhys Webb was sharp when he got on and took his try well. He should’ve been on just after half-time and I hope Warren Gatland starts him on Saturday as he’s a constant threat. On one positive the Lions scored a fantastic try through a Liam Williams break from his own 22, finished off by flanker Sean O’Brien.

I see the banter between Steve Hansen and Warren Gatland is getting a bit serious with Gatland saying Connor Murray is being targeted after he box kicks and he needs more protection from the referees. I would hope the Lions forwards should protect him and if the flanker Jerome Kaino is targeting him they should deal with it on the field and shield him until he kicks. Let’s hope Rhys Webb will get the nod this week anyway!

Wales were not that impressive against Samoa in Apia in the first half in wet and greasy conditions. Wales scored a quick try through Steff Evans early in the second half and he scored again in the 76th minute to seal the game. The positive for Wales was that it was two games, two wins and Robin McBryde gave a lot of youngsters a taste of international rugby. QUESTION: Do you think the Lions will win this Saturday and would you make any changes? NO, I think the All Blacks will beat us again. I know Gatland has said the mistakes are fixable but I can see the All Black getting better too! Yes I would make a few changes. I would start Rhys Webb and George North in the backs and I would start Sam Warburton, Maro Itoje and Kyle Sinckler in the pack. And I would have Justin Tipuric and Courtney Lawes on the bench for impact.
