WALES football manager Chris Coleman and his coach Kit Symons made a special appearance at Garth Primary to help the school celebrate achieving two awards.

The duo joined pupils and teachers at a celebration assembly after Garth Primary gained the Rights Respecting Schools Level 2 Award and joined the select number of schools to have gained the National Quality Award from the Welsh Government as part of the Healthy Schools Wales Scheme.

Head teacher Julie Thomas said: “We were absolutely thrilled to welcome Chris and Kit to our special school assembly. They were fantastic with the children, who have talked about their ever since.

“Chris and Kit were treated to a performance by the school choir, shared their inspirational stories, answered pupils’ questions and made time to autograph everything from footballs to school uniforms.”

The National Quality Award marks Garth Primary in Maesteg out as being one of the healthi- visit est and happiest schools in the country.

Award assessors praised the school for having a “consistent enthusiasm and commitment to both staff and pupil wellbeing”.

Wellbeing is a “truly embedded value of the school” while “sport and physical activity has a very high priority”.

Assessors also reported that the school’s “strong sense of purpose” enables them to be very clear on which programmes and initiatives to focus on, allowing pupils to “flourish and to achieve”.

Coun Charles Smith, Bridgend County Borough Council’s cabinet member for education and regeneration, said: “Huge congratulations to Garth on their double success.

“The National Quality Award acknowledges the fact that health and wellbeing is firmly rooted in school life, while the Rights Respecting accolade is a further sign that Garth Primary is doing everything it can to develop resilient, informed and confident young citizens.

“Well done to all of the pupils and staff for their hard work in achieving these awards. What a fantastic way to end the school year.”
