A LOW gross round of 764-72 enabled young Ioan L Consitt last Saturday to win the Dennis Phillips & Gerald Price Cup at Pyle & Kenfig.

Birdies on the third and 11th holes allied to nine pars got the job done and his victory was by one shot over ex-Coed-y-Mwstwr star Clifford Berry (eight pars in 85-12-73).

Matthew Davies got a sweet birdie on the 16th and collected nine pars in a score of 84-9-72 that wrapped up third position.

Former football star Mark Tossell went around in 89-13-76 (six pars) and Jeffrey Lugg also had six pars in 86-9-77.

Stephen Rock returned a solid 90-13-77 (eight pars) and on the same mark came Gareth Beale 86-9-77 (two birdies) and Leslie Crole 89-12-77.

And young Consitt carried on where he left off the previous day in winning a club Junior Stableford competitio­n 00M6.

This time he got home with another useful score of 38 Stableford points, sinking a putt for two on the 15th while further birdies were recorded on holes seven and 11.

Eleven pars and four bogeys completed another good day out on the Kenfig golf course, and his victory was by three points over Finley Hampton, grandson of Lakeside star Desmond.

Third-placed Tom Peet rued a hole-nine blob on a card containing a birdie on three, 14 pars and two bogeys.

Two players then signed for 30 points – Jacob Bai- ley and Matthew Morgan.

The Senior Section last week contested the Reg Doyle Cup that Brian James lifted on the strength of par 36 Stableford points.

Despite only scoring on 15 holes, six pars did the job in a one-point victory over Larry Lewis (birdie on seven and four pars).

John Storie shot a two on the 12th hole in running up 32 points while classy Mike Holland reawakened his glorious past during a sublime round of 31 points to secure fourth place.

Also on the 31-point mark were Dr Vivian Thomas and Harvey Seifert while Michael Rennie got an agreeable 30 points.

On the Ladies scene at the Kenfig club, Mary Morgan was successful in the Jubilee Cup and Joan Jones Qualifier, shooting 98-22-76 (four pars).

Cheryl Western was runner-up, signing for 848-76, with birdies on the eighth and penultimat­e holes.

And Fauve Birch (low gross 79-2-77) had to be satisfied with third place after a costly seven on the 16th ruined a good card.

Earlier, she got a two on the 12th; further birdies on holes five and 11 together with eight pars.

Fourth place went to Lynne Williams on the back of 104-26-78 from Cora Edwards 99-20-79.

Earlier, Cath Parry lifted the Committee Trophy with a birdie on the 11th hole and seven pars moving her on to a winning 39 Stableford points.

Playing off an away handicap Susan Ellis also got 39 points out of her round, shooting a magnificen­t eagle on the 16th (par five off Ladies tee) and eight pars.

Third-placed Gwyneth Parsons registered eight pars in a 37-point return with par 36 on the cards of Claire Morris (birdie on 16 and 10 pars), Alison Evans and Teri Ward.

On the 31-point mark came Celia Thomas, Karen Campbell-Ace and Alison Hurry (birdie on the penultimat­e hole).

Finally, P&K starlet Brodie Lewis was earlier in the month scuppered by countback on the Ping Welsh Junior Tour staged at Carmarthen.

In the U12 category, Brodie finished level with K Orford only to lose out on number-crunching. Dan O’Connor chomping at the bit, the PGA Maesteg Medal was an early casualty.

But in competitio­ns that did go ahead, John Richmond was bang in form during the Senior Section 15-hole competitio­n, triumphing with 31 Stableford points from Phil Lewis (30) and Eric James (29).

The Wayfarers Weekly was won by Richard Davies with a splendid 40 Stableford points while Senior Section captain Chris Thomas was runner-up with 37 points and Ernest Binding third on the 35-point level.

And Mark Thomas won the correspond­ing ninehole event with a sizzling 20 points.

The Halletts nine-holer went to Robert Arthur, who topped the scoreboard with 18 points.
