KEV KICKS OFF

- With Kevin Ellis

I REALLY hope that Celtic Rugby agree to let the South African teams Southern Kings and Cheetahs into the Pro12 league. A decision will be made next Tuesday and if successful there are rumours the league will be split into two leagues of seven teams. I think they’ve got to agree as the Pro12 league is the least competitive and supported behind the Top 14 in France and the Aviva Premiership in England. Let’s hope for the sake of Celtic rugby some fresh teams and more excitement for the players and spectators.

It’s not looking good for Leigh Halfpenny, once the golden boy of Welsh rugby. All four regions have refused to take him on as Toulon have not offered him a new contract and with Liam Williams being the Lions’ No 1 full back it will be tough for Halfpenny to demand the money he was on in France unless he goes back to France, which might be his only option. I hope he gets himself sorted as he’s been great for Wales but I do think he’s losing his speed and attacking ability but he’s still solid in defence and a great goal kicker. Good luck to him!

It’s only a week away now July 29. The teams are starting to flood in for the Hilary Floyd-Ellis netball tournament at Bridgend Tennis Club at 1pm. I’m starting a few training sessions for Kev’s Kings this week as I was disappointed at not getting to the final last year due to some shocking calls from the referees! I’ve been texting Rhys Webb our tactics in Dubai. He’s having a well deserved break after a great Lions tour. I’m hoping Allan Bateman, Dafydd James, Lee Byrne, Strongy, Yardleys, Ellis and Boobyer brothers plus more are all fit and ready to go. Good luck all teams and happy fundraising for Velindre Cancer Hospital. QUESTION: What do you think of two SA teams joining Pro12 league? I THINK it’s fantastic news and hopefully it will improve the standard of the league because I think we are way behind the French and English leagues. I also hope all the teams get a chance to play the two South African teams and enjoy the experience of playing in South Africa.
