Hailing from the Garw Valley, Lance Corporal Ashley Williams, boxing champion of the British Army, made a return to the ring this year after eighteen months away from the sport. Williams has just passed out as a PT instructor in the British Army and has been welcomed back into the elite Welsh boxing squad.

Ashley won this year's Welsh title with a third round stoppage in a match against the highly rated Ben Baker. He then went on to box in the British Championsh­ips where he beat Englishman, Kieron Macdonald. In the final, Williams came away with the silver medal, coming off second best against Scotland's Aqueel Ahmed.

The next challenge for the former Garw Valley boxer was taking part in the highly regarded Haringey Boxing Cup which was held over three days at the Alexandra Palace in London.

Three hundred and eighty eight boxers from all around the world participat­ed in the contest in which Ashley boxed his way through to the final of his weight class, successful­ly claiming the gold medal by beating a fighter from Sri Lanka.

His bout in the final was rated as one of the battles of the tournament with Boxing News magazine stating: "Both boxers let their hands go

The date has now been confirmed for the F.A.W. Youth Cup match. On Sunday, September 3, the newly formed Garw Youth team will play Cardiff Academical­s Youth at Blandy Park.

Garw Youth are always on the lookout for new players aged between 16-18 years of age. Training is at 6.30pm every Tuesday and Thursday at Blandy Park in Pontycymer and all are welcome to come along. Regular events as follows:

Tuesdays at 8pm is Poker Night.

Thursdays at 9pm is Quiz Night and Play Your Cards Right where you could win £100.

Why not join the Nantymoel Armature Boxing Club every Monday & Wednesday for a Ladies Boxfit.

This is on the following nights from 6pm to 7pm with a charge of £4 each.

Boxing club address is Bethania Row, Ogmore Vale but the entrance is at the back on High Street opposite the NonPol Club.

Ogmore Vale has had two tennis courts, attached to the Ogmore Vale Bowling Club on Park Avenue, for several years, but are very rarely used.

We have two hard courts from which we will be playing social tennis every Tuesday, from 6pm-8pm and Sundays, from 10amnoon throughout the summer.

We will also be running two FAST4 Tournament­s each month which is a quick and exciting new format of tennis.

Social membership for adults is £25, seniors and juniors £15 for the year – this will give you full access to the club at any time.

Entry to tournament­s is £5. We welcome all standards and are a relaxed and social group.

Tennis is a great way to get fit have fun socialise and compete anyone interested please message me back and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Ogmore Valley Ladies Choir now have their practice night on Wednesdays at Are Canolfan Bethlehem, Commercial Street, Ogmore Vale. Starting at 7pm. All are welcome - over 18 years.

This is a social gathering and occasional­ly a trip to the theatre or a meal out is arranged. We are members of a Knitting Club who live in Nantymoel. We meet twice a week at Dinam Close every Tuesday and Friday at 10am to noon.

We are always looking for new members and all our efforts are to make things for charity.

If there is anyone who has any spare wool they do not want, we would be very grateful to receive it.
