ANNIVERSARY celebrations at Porthcawl Primary left staff and pupils feeling groovy.

They went back to the 1960s to mark the 50th birthday of the school, which opened in 1967.

But the event was bittersweet as they also said goodbye to Andrew Wood, head teacher for the last 16 years, who is retiring.

“By holding a 1960s garden party we felt it would be a fitting tribute to the school and would mark the retirement of Mr Wood,” said deputy head Evan Richards.

Pupils competed in their own Porthcawl’s Got Talent competition and the school also staged a musical production of A Blast From the Past.

Elements of the school’s history were written into the script.

“The children were incredible and worked so hard learning lines and rehearsing,” said music co-ordinator Nicola Loveluck Hooper.

“There were not many dry eyes in the house by the end of the show as the finale climaxed with an emotional ending.

“We would like to thank all the parents and Porthcawl residents for providing us with treasured photographs and information about the history of the school which we used in our production.”

Everyone in the school thanked Mr Wood for his devotion to his job and wished him well in his retirement.
