PORT TALBOT & DISTRICT BOWLS LEAGUE

-

LEADERS Prince of Wales Court Hawks last week strengthened their grip on Division Two with a 79-63 win in the big Porthcawl derby clash at Griffin Park, writes Tony Poole.

The Penylan Avenue side won on three rinks with skip Brian Tucker leading them home on the back of a 19-9 success.

It’s left the Hawks flying high in the table, and they now head closest challengers Mount Pleasant by 13 points.

It was also a grand week for Kenfig Hill on the Port Talbot circuit, carding a 68-64 home win over Mount Pleasant and triumphing 74-50 over Maesteg Celtic in Garth Park.

Skip Dennis James was in top form in the win over Mount, winning the day 24-11, while in the Llynfi Valley the business was done by skip Graham Bluck, who swept to a 2211 victory.

It took Kenfig Hill into third spot – and just four points behind Mount Pleasant from the same number of completed games.

But there was no joy for Caerau Welfare, who saw promotion hopes fade af- ter losing 76-46 at secondplaced Mount Pleasant.

In Division Three, all eyes were on the Caepant Field and the most local of derby matches between old rivals Bridgend and Bridgend Municipal.

And it was Bridgend who were celebrating at the end of play, having won 65-60 with skip Paul Turner successful 19-9.

Maesteg were unable to halt unstoppable Aberavon Liberal Club Do’s towards the title, losing 82-50 in Vivian Park.

Meanwhile, early season sparkle from Aberkenfig is now just a pleasant memory after suffering a third straight loss.

This time they went un- der, 65-56, at Melyn Borough and they only salvaged two points via one winning rink.

However, Aberkenfig still have the lead, heading BP Llandarcy Tankers by three points, but the Oilmen have a game in hand.

In Division Five, Pencoed still have a good chance of immediate promotion after gaining an important 55-41 home win over third-placed Briton Ferry Steel Combine.

This latest victory left Pencoed 19 points behind second-placed Briton Ferry Town with two games in hand.

And Prince of Wales Court Eagles pulled off their best win of the season, feathering their nest with all 14 points courtesy of an 82-14 win over Melyn United at Penylan Avenue.

Top rink honours on the night went to skip Trevor Deeble, who handed in a 27-7 winning card.
