COED-Y-MWSTWR

-

AN ASTONISHING 16 players went under the card last Saturday during a July Stableford contest at Coed-y-Mwstwr.

The winner on the 42-point mark was Steve Williams, who birdied the 10th hole and shot nine pars.

Runner-up Chris D Webb matched par on 12 occasions on a 40-point card and the same level was hit by Matthew Richards (two on 11; further birdies on three, five and 16 along with 10 pars).

Ross Haskins (two on hole four) and Chris Hayward tied fourth on 40 points and a further point back came Gary Dowling, Stephen Reed and Steve O’Connell.

Three players signed for 38 points – Luke Morgan, Stephen Thomas and Stephen Stock – and a further point behind came Michael Green, Lloyd Dowling, Gareth Summerton, R T Commander and Mark Smith.

And the card of 36-point man Jake Hapgood – playing off an away handicap – contained a Tri-tu (twos on holes two, 11 and 17) together with four further birdies.

On the Senior scene, Eurof Parry was the winner of last week’s Stableford on the back of 39 sparkling points.

Though failing to score on hole two, three pars were enough to get the 27-handicapper first past the post.

Recent Senior Open winner Byron Cox again showed up well, carding 38 points on this occasion courtesy of nine pars, while three players entered the Sam Bevan snug with 37 points – Dave riod they tended to look more dangerous on the counter attack without really suggesting a goal was imminent.

For long period the Treefellers ruled the roost, and with 20 minutes to go Pencoed chief Powell played musical chairs.

Having been without 10 first-team candidates, Evans, Steve Clift and exroadrunner Adrian Morgan.

Joker in the pack Tony Poole once more proved all things come to those who wait in this game with par 36 for sixth spot, and that was also the military score from George R Davis.

Five players with 35 points were next on the scoreboard – Bryn Thomas, Michael Wegner, John Rogers, putting genius Michael Joyce and Terrence Haggerty.

Six twos were shot on the day and they came on hole four from the king of golf Arthur Cole, leftie wizard David Griffiths and John Jones.

David Griffiths completed a Tutu on the 11th green while on the penultimate hole there were deuces from Trevor Duggan and the great Alfred Woodward.

Meanwhile, plenty of interest is being shown from members in the next D R Stead flash sale of golf clubs, as his club locker is crammed with goodies that have seldom seen the light of day.

Coed-y-Mwstwr Halletts won a thrilling Glamorgan County League Cup contest against Parc at Bryn Road.

The tie all hinged on the final pairing with Michael Jacques getting a downhill three-foot putt on the home hole to get a winning half.

Steve McAllen partnered Jacques in the all square match while there were two home winners.

Jerry Devine and Matthew Carpenter led the way with an 8 & 6 success with Ross Haskins and Paul Reed winning 4 & 3.

The other match was a really tight affair with young Nigel Key and Sammy Slennett losing by one hole.

Coed-y-Mwstwr will now face Caerphilly in the semi-finals over two legs.

Last week Coed-yMwstwr Ladies staged two Stableford competitions with Dawn Austin going through the gears to motor to victory in the midweek event with a sizzling 41 points.

Despite misfiring on the eighth hole, carding a blob, the remainder of the round saw her on cruise some players returning from injury problems and newcomers were sent on.

But they were undone by a set-piece goal from Matt Beynon while a cool Ellis Harris finish set up the 3-0 scoreline.

The return of brick wall merchant Paul Martin at the back and front man Nathan Bryn – who control via 11 pars.

Runner-up Julie Davies shot seven pars only to rue no-returns on holes four and had to be satisfied with 35 points while her pal Rebecca Roberts was a point back (birdie on 14 and five pars).

Fourth-place Jackie Summerton was also in fine form, getting 33 points out of her round to finish fourth.

And on Saturday, it was the turn of Rebecca Roberts, mother of mini monster ball-mashing Mali, to mount the winner’s rostrum.

Her winning score was par 36 points, and it was struck via birdies on holes five and 10 along with five pars.

Once more Julie Davies was runner-up, firing 34 points on this occasion, with Janet Roberts third on 28 points. Sexton, Gareth Williams and James Williams.

In recent Wednesday Stableford competitions, Ellis Perks took the 16th staging with 41 points from Gavin Davies (40) and Donald Knight (35).

And in the 17th contest, victory went to Ged Rave on the back of 39 points, finishing two points in front of Joe Lacey with Donald Knight a further two points back.

Meanwhile, Grove Seniors last week held a Balls competition that went to John Thomas with a toasty 45 Stableford points.

He finished seven points clear of Joe Lacey while promising Bill Owen struck 35 points to claim third place.

Yesterday (Tuesday), Grove Seniors were staging the July Medal embracing fourth Eclectic, and tomorrow they host Pennard in a club fixture.
