Magnificent win for John Rogers

-

A MAGNIFICENT two on the seventh hole set up victory for John Rogers in the Joint-Captain’s tournament at St Mary’s.

It led to him firing a winning 38 Stableford points with the round containing further birdies on the fifth and 11th holes together with five pars.

Just one point back came Mervyn Brearly who carded birdies on the 13th and penultimate holes - and he matched par on eight occasions.

Dave Thomas got six pars on a 37-point card for third spot, and Christian Martinson finished on the same mark.

Martin Brown shot par 36 while three competitors were a further point in arrears – Steve Worrall, Jeffrey Davies and Paul Smalldon. CLIFFORD Morris matched par four times last week to emerge victorious in a Senior Stableford event at the Lakeside club in Margam. It lifted him on to 38 points, and the victory was on countback over Peter Wooster who was at the races through 11 pars.

Third-placed Dennis Gould shot 34 points and he finished one point in front of five players – top cricket umpire Peter Watkins, big gun Nicky Walters, Frank Byng, Dave Burridge and Bob Hazzard.

Tomorrow (Thursday), Grove Seniors are staging a special tournament at the St Mary’s club in memory of John Parry. John died last month and because he always threatened to leave Lakeside and go to St Mary’s, a decision was made to take the memorial event to the Pencoed club.
