Evans triumphs in Seniors

DAVID Evans pulled off another victory in a Senior event at Coed-y-Mwstwr in last week lifting the Arthur David Memorial Bowl.

The tournament perpetuate­s Arthur, who during the fledgling years of the Bryn Road club was a popular member on the senior scene.

Porthcawl-based Evans ran up 43 Stableford points, and not even a blob on hole 13 could prevent him edging out Scottish star Andy Logan (two on second hole) by two points. Arthur Cole was on fire again, also entering the Sam Bevan snug with 41 points, and he matched par on three occasions.

And king Cole was also a merry soul after holing out for a two on the fourth green over the pond.

Another on-fire golfer, Bryn Thomas, shot 40 points for fourth position with Jimmy Blackball potting balls all over the shop on a 39-point card.

Dai (Maesteg) Thomas took a trip down memory lane in revisiting a glorious past for 38 points while on the same mark came Terrence Haggerty and Ogmore-by-sea beach boy Barrie Delaney.

Brian Austin drove on to 37 points, as did Tony Lang, with rounds of par 36 coming from Michael Wegner, William Jones, Clive M Tremlett, Russell Morris, John Rogers and Graham Gardner.

But feisty competitor D R Stead, who is contemplat­ing a future in selling golf merchandis­e as opposed to playing the wonderful game, only came in with a modest 26 points.

There was one other two shot on the day, and it came from senior profession­al Clive Dyke on the penultimat­e hole. twists in a round of 71-764 that contained a Tutu (twos on holes four and 18) 14 pars along with a bogey and double bogey.

Runner-up Roger Clark signed for 90-20-70 (four pars) with former Maudlam cricket star Wynne Dredge batting his way on to 93-22-71 for third spot.

Also on the nett 71 mark were John Budge 97-26-71 and thinking man’s golfer Phil Rees 98-27-71.

Four players were next on the scoreboard with nett 72s – Alan Jones 9119-72, Graham Davies 9927-72, master golfer Colin Rumbelow low gross round of 79-7-72 and Kevyn Field 92-20-72.

Bob Ralph was 10th courtesy of 94-21-73 from Brian Thomas 95-22-73 and Michael Howells 9219-73.

The sectional winners were as follows:

0-14 Handicaps: Kevin Budge nett 73.

15-19 Handicaps: Alan Jones nett 72.

20-28 Handicaps: Roger Clark nett 70.

Meanwhile, in a Senior club fixture last week, Grove lost 6.5 – 1.5 at St Pierre.

Members & Guests Day was again well attended with Richie Cliffe and Gerald Cox taking the honours with 47 Stableford points.

They had two points in hand over David Thomas and Matthew Weir with third-placed Nicky Morgan and Dean Allen hitting 44 points.

Also on the 44-point mark came fourth-place men Paul John and David Ralph.

The nearest the pin prize on the 18th hole went to John Thomas while golf guru Dick Bourne had the best second shot into the 11th green over the infamous pond.

Last Saturday, Grove staged the RNLI Pairs with victory going to John Carpenter and Stormin Norman Williams.

The 45-point Stableford winning score was on countback from Joe and Anthony Lacey while three points back came Paul Jenkins and James Thomas.

Fourth-place honours were secured by Kenneth Godwin and Ian Thomas on the 41-point mark while 40 was a popular score on the day.

It appeared on the cards of six duos – Martin Rees and Julian Lewis, Robert Davies and Dave Williams, Richie Cliffe and Dave Thomas, Steffan Hart and Kevin Budge, Martin Evans and Gareth Davies along with James Williams and Ceri Windos.

Grove Ladies staged a Stableford competitio­n that Maureen Bevan won with 35 points. Her winning margin was by one point over Sheila Stubbs with Lock’s Commoner Melanie Williams and Eironwyn Emlyn-Jones both getting 33 points. A further two points behind came Susan Clark and Carole Warlow with Sonia Peters on the 30-point level.
