Bont’s blushes spared as Flay grabs equaliser

A LATE equaliser from newcomer Bradley Flay saved Penybont blushes against Ammanford at the Kymco Stadium last Saturday, writes Tony Poole.
The Rice Roaders deputised at the 11th hour for Western League club Clevedon Town, who last Friday pulled out of the trip to the Bridgend super club.
And the Welsh League Division Two side from Carmarthenshire proved lively opponents, underlining the point with a first-half goal from Rhys Fisher, son of ex-Bridgend Town star Phil.
But only an outstanding display from Ammanford goalkeeper Jimmy Kirkwood kept them in the game – and if it wasn’t for him they would have surely taken a battering.
Before Fisher netted just ahead of half time, Bont should have scored twice, but they weren’t clinical enough in front of goal.
That said, Thomas Davies looked sharp up top while Billy Borge and Bleddyn Webster also showed up well in midfield.
However, Bont certainly missed front-running Marcus Griffiths, who is sidelined with a groin complaint, and their final ball into the box lacked conviction.
During the second half, they introduced 16-yearold goalkeeper Joey Regan, a Cardiff native who learned his trade in Hereford. Flay levelled with 15 minutes to go, but has hard as Bont tried they failed to muster a winner.
During midweek, Bont suffered a 3-0 home defeat against a slick Mer- thyr Town side, who fielded a full-strength team.
However, the Bridgend super club looked the better side for an hour
even though they trailed to an Ian Trayz goal at the break.
And once Trayz scored again on the hour, the Martyrs were comfortable with a late Corey Jenkins goal sealing the win.
Bont have just one more pre-season workout – Gar- den Village away on Monday night – ahead of the league opener at home to Monmouth Town a week on Saturday.
