Three-shot victory for Golunski

NICHOLAS Golunski shot a nett 65 to claim a three-shot victory last Saturday in a Rabbits & Midway Cup tournament at Southerndo­wn.

Figures of 75-10-65 also represente­d a low gross score, and the round contained a two on hole seven, further birdies on the fourth, eighth and ninth greens along with nine pars.

Martin Phillips went around in 80-12-68 to finish runner-up with a birdie on the parfive sixth hole, and he matched par on eight occasions.

Another birdie man on hole six was thirdplace­d Stephen G Jenkins with 85-16-69 while H A Brown sunk a putt for two on hole 10 in signing for 88-18-70 and fourth position.

A two on the seventh hole and birdie on the sixth appeared on the 8212-70 card of fifth-placed S J Cox while next on the scoreboard came Andy Allman 82-12-70 (two birdies) and Fred Govani 88-17-71.

Eight players then entered the clubhouse with nett scores of 72 – Paul Rees 85-13-72, Chris Rees 90-18-72, M A Brown 84-12-72, Charles John Davies 87-15-72 (two on hole 10), Martin Brand 89-17-72, P Jones 87-15-72, Jonathan Griffiths 90-18-72 and G Evans 82-10-72.

Earlier, Mark Rees took a July Hanner Ffordd event at the Ogmore-bysea club with a par score of 36 Stableford points.

The 22-handicappe­r shot four pars to finish two points in front of G W Jones.

Third-place went to Stephen Lewis, who carded 34 points, and the same score came from both C Hutin and T Grant.

Five players then finished with 32 points – P Wyn Jones, S Hodson, Alan Jarvis, Barrie Davies and Kenneth Davies.

ANNETTE Rhys last week lifted the Dennis Phillips Rose Bowl at Pyle & Kenfig, scoring 35 Stableford points.

A birdie on the par five ninth hole set up the win along with four pars on the last five holes.

Runner-up on 34 points was Fauve Birch, a steady card displayed 14 pars and four bogeys, while her mother Mags took third-place honours with 31 points (five pars). LEE Hodgson was triumphant following a successful Captain’s Day staged by Jonathan Thomas last week at Maesteg.

His winning score was a toasty 42 Stableford points while Corey Butler was well served by a 40-point total that saw off ex-Maesteg and Neath rugby star Jeffrey Bird on countback.

Fourth-place went to Lawrence Ferriday courtesy of a 39-point card.

Nearest the pin on the sixth hole was Norman Lloyd; longest drive was smoked by Leslie Pearce and Mark Thomas was nearest to the pin with a second shot into the 12th green.

In a Lipscombe Cup qualifier, Michael Reed took control to run out victorious with a nett 65 from junior captain Gethin Taylor (70).

Wayne Snow drifted home with a nett 71, and the final qualifying place on nett 73 was decided on countback in favour of Neil Williams over Morgan John. And in front of a packed clubhouse the semi-final draw was made with Reed playing Taylor and Williams looking to melt Snow.

The latest member responsibl­e for drinking the clubhouse bar dry is Rob Lloyd, who last week got an ace on the ninth green known to locals as the Old Parish hole.

Meanwhile, Jim Summers played sunshine golf to lift the Senior Stableford 15-hole competitio­n last week on a countback card of 31 points.

Dave Roberts clinched runner-up honours while three points behind came Ronald Talbot.

The Wayfarers tournament last week attracted some poor weather conditions, and Ernest Binding won the day with 31 Stableford points from Alex Cox (30) and Nigel Jones (28).

On the Ladies scene out on the Llynfi Valley course, top golf writer Ceri-Ann Morgan penned 38 sizzling points to walk away with the Stableford Challenge Cup.

She finished six points clear of Karen JacksonJoh­n with Pamela Jones a further point back.
