£4,000 hooked for charities
A 48-HOUR fishathon saw anglers from Glamorgan raise thousands of pounds for charity.
Held by Glamorgan Anglers Club, the event saw its members fish for two days at Treoes Lake near Bridgend, raising a total of £3,452.75 for disabled children’s charity Y Bont and £500 for Marie Curie cancer care.
Fundraising and marketing manager for Y Bont, Eleanor Gardner, said: “The Glamorgan Anglers showed considerable determination and a great camaraderie and sense of fun during the 48 hour fishathon.
“That was not only by enduring all winds and weathers, including gale force winds to eat, sleep and drink but also by gaining an incredible amount of sponsorship and raffle prizes year on year – no mean feat.
“This year’s winner was Jenny Collins who caught a whopping 526lb 1oz of fish. John Hoare was the junior winner catching 142lb and the biggest fish was caught by Jeff Wenger, a 19lb grass carp.”
Y Bont first developed links with the Glamorgan Anglers Club seven years ago when they were selected as their charity for the 2010 48-hour event.
At that time, Y Bont was supporting a child with close family links to the club, and members recognised how much the charity had helped the family.
The club have continued to support Y Bont and to date they have raised a total of £24,000, including the money raised during the event on June 30.
The charity said those efforts has helped it continue to deliver vital services for disabled and seriously ill children and their families across the region, especially in what it called a “very challenging economic climate”.
Ms Gardner added: “We would like to thank GAC members for continuing to support Y Bont and other local charities, their dedication is very special.”
