Parc Slip: During the 1960s and 70s, coal was excavated from the Parc Slip mine in Tondu, using open cast coal mining methods. Before that, coal was dug from the Parc Slip drift mine but in 1892, an explosion in the mine took the lives of 112 men and boys.
Saturday, August 26, will mark the 125th anniversary of the disaster, which happened at 8.20am.
Join the Wildlife Trust at the Parc Slip nature reserve and visitor centre for a day of remembrance, talks and heritage walks.
Meet at the memorial fountain, Parc Slip at 8.20am; eat breakfast at Parc Slip’s visitor centre. An exhibition by the Parc Slip memorial committee can be seen in the Discover Room and a new self-guided heritage trail can be followed around the reserve.
A talk by Carole and John Mason, based on Agnes Owen’s reminiscence of the Parc entitled ‘Charlie... One Man’s Story, takes place at 2pm. Another talk – ‘The Parc Slip Explosion’ – by Neville Granville, follows at 2.30pm,

Smyrna Penyfai: The Sunday school would like to invite the children of the surrounding area who are aged four and over to join them on Sunday morning between 10.30am and 12 noon for stories, singing and fun with arts and craft work.
The Sunday service is held at 6pm and is led by Rev Alwyn Evans. All are very welcome to the service and to join us for refreshments in the vestry afterwards
Coffee morning is held on Tuesday between 10am and 12noon with good company and a raffle is also held in aid of local charities Bible study takes place on Thursday evening at 7.15pm and is led in turn by Mrs Marlyn James and Miss Dorithy Evans.
