Sweet success for Kate and Emma
SWEET-TOOTHED Kate Buche and Emma Hamawand have opened up Bridgend’s first dessert cafe – with a little bit of help.
Welsh Government funded Bridgend Communities First and Communities for Work assisted Kate and Emma in their determination to set up Adi’s Café by providing training, support and guidance in self-employment.
With Bridgend Communities First’s and Communities for Work’s free courses and support, Kate and Emma gained the skills and confidence to become self-employed, leading them to open the smart new eatery on Wyndham Street.
Emma and Kate both have a set of close-knit family and friends, many of whom have dietary requirements or preferences, and they found that finding somewhere that was suitable for everyone was hard.
This inspired them to research setting up a local dessert cafe where everyone could come, regardless of their requirements, and enjoy a large choice of good-quality, flavoursome, locally sourced desserts.
So, what advice do they have for anyone following in their footsteps?
Emma and Kate said: “Do your research, work hard and plan! It’s a long process but if you put in the groundwork it will be much easier.
“Also, see what courses and guidance you can get for free in your local area because this saved us money and gave us the additional skills and confidence that we needed.”
Kate and Emma signed up and completed accredited courses run by Bridgend Communities First, including cake decorating, food safety and first aid.
After completing the food safety course, the pair achieved a five star food hygiene rating.
