Aberkenfig Allotments: The Allotment Associatio­n is holding its 6th Annual Horticultu­re Show on Saturday, September 2, at Aberkenfig Social and Athletic Club (formerly The Legion).

After judging the display of Vegetables, Flowers and Cookery will be open for public viewing at 2 pm.

Presentati­on of prizes by Coun Derrick Baker of Newcastle Higher Community Council will take place at 2.30pm immediatel­y followed by an auction of all the exhibits.

All classes in the show are open so if you are interested in exhibiting your own produce please call David Lewis 856319, Harry Chanter 723715 or Bob Edwards 720633 for an entry form.

Parc Slip Memorial: During the 1960s and 70s, coal was excavated from the Parc Slip mine in Tondu, using open cast coal mining methods.

Before that, coal was dug from the Parc Slip drift mine but in 1892, an explosion in the mine took the lives of 112 men and boys.

This Saturday, August 26, marks the 125th anniversar­y of the disaster, which happened at 8.20am.

Join the Wildlife Trust at the Parc Slip nature reserve and visitor centre for a day of remembranc­e, talks and heritage walks.

Meet at the memorial fountain, Parc Slip at 8.20am; eat breakfast at Parc Slip’s visitor centre.

An exhibition by the Parc Slip memorial committee can be seen in the Discover Room and a new self-guided heritage trail can be followed around the reserve.

A talk by Carole and John Mason, based on Agnes Owen’s reminiscen­ce of the Parc entitled Charlie... One Man’s Story, takes place at 2pm.

Another talk – The Parc Slip Explosion by Neville Granville - follows at 2.30pm.

Quiz League: Bridgend and District Quiz League’s 45th season starts on September 4 at Tondu Railway Club with team registrati­on and a fun quiz, which is open to all, starting at 8pm – there will also be a buffet provided.

Coffee morning is held on Tuesday from 10am12noon and a raffle is also held in aid of local charities.

Welcome to Adare Street: Corvo Lounge, (formerly the Victoria Inn). Work began on the Vic recently and of course is now the Corvo Lounge. Bridgend Civic Trust were keen that the Victoria connection was not lost and so the Civic Society are pleased that there is a large picture of Queen Victoria inside the lounge.

Open Day: The next open day for St John’s House (former Hospice) Newcastle Hill will be held this Saturday, August 26, from 11am-3pm.

Bridgend and District Local History Society: The winter programme starts on Wednesday September 13 at 7pm at the new venue Carnegie House (former Library) Wyndham Street.

The first speaker will be Mr Allan Underhill with Images of Bridgend.

The first meeting will be enrolment evening with membership at £7 per year and visitors are welcome and fee is £2 each per meeting.

Hospital Service: Pauline Lewis from Porthcawl will lead the next Hospital Christian Fellowship Service this Friday, August 25, at 3pm. The service, which, as always is held in the Hospital Chapel, Princess of Wales Hospital Coity Road.

Bridgend Town Council: Do you have a story to share about the town during World War II – then the Town Council would like you to take part in the heritage project.

The project, funded by Heritage Lottery fund, aims to capture oral histories and develop an archive of photograph­s and memorabili­a of Bridgend during the war.

Come along to one of the Community Drop-in Days at Carnegie House on September 9, October 14 or November 11 between 11am and 2pm.

Ewenny Air Rifle Club: The club held its AGM onAugust 7 in the Sarn Club. The chairman welcomed all members and thanked the management of the Sarn Club for their support in accommodat­ing the range facilities.

The secretary gave his report, stating that the two teams in the club – the Hawks with 8/9 shooting members and the Eagles who have 10/11 available for match nights – neither of which were at the top of the list within the end of season league records.

The treasurer reported a slight fall in the income of the club since last year, mainly in the stock of ammunition etc being carried. It was proposed and agreed that owing to the rise in overall costs for the club in the coming year, membership fees should be increased by £15 bringing it up to £50 per year.

The chairman thanked both officers for their hard work keeping the club going over the years. The chairman pointed out that in fact the club has now been going for more than 100 years. All matches and practice shoots are free to members and anyone interested in taking up the sport of seven yard target shooting should contact Bryn Richards on 01656 650677.

Cefn Junction Signal Box: The signal box will be open this Sunday, August 27, from 2pm5pm. Free admission. Unfortunat­ely, the model rail has broken down but the kettle is still working. Why not go along for a cuppa and view the fascinatin­g local exhibition. Huw David has offered to brew up!

Bank Holiday at the Signal Box: Entitled Rail & Retro, you are invited to take a trip down memory lane on Bank Holiday Monday, August 28, where you can check out vintage vehicles, ride on model railways and soak up local history at the Cefn Signal Box.

A ‘ride on’ train will take passengers, children and grown-ups, on trips from Bedford Road to the Signal Box.

Rail and Retro is organised by Cefn Gwyrdd, the voluntary group that saved and maintains the signal box. were free to wander the garden which is undergoing some restoratio­n works and, visit the ancient Egyptian room and an Oriental room much favoured by the more affluent Victorians of the day.

Then homeward bound arriving back in Coychurch early evening following an enjoyable and a very relaxing and interestin­g day out in the Forest of Dean area. Sue Elworthy gave a vote of thanks to Sandra for organising the event.

Cwtch Cynffig: For 50 years Kenfig Hill has provided a meeting place for people with disabiliti­es and their carers and the Cwtch Cynffig project continues their good work every Thursday.

Activities include arts & crafts, chair based exercise, health and wellbeing sessions.

Morning sessions run from 10am-12.30pm and Afternoon sessions run from 1.30pm-4pm.

Each session costs £5 which include refreshmen­ts. Lunch is also provided at an additional cost of £2.50. Call the Talbot Community Centre on 01656 749754.
