Reading Groups: Join one of the many reading groups in Pyle Library.

The Night-Owls Group meet on the third Thursday of the month at 7pm.

The Daytime Group meets on the last Thursday of the month at 2pm.

The Teenage Group (12-19 years old) meets on the second Thursday of the month.

The Junior Reading Group (8-12 years old) meet on the second Tuesday of the month.

Bounce and Rhyme meets on a Friday at 10am. judging, light refreshmen­ts will be available as well as the BBQ. There will be no admission charge.

Best Wishes are sent to Treasurer, Paul Jones who is recovering from an operation on his knee following a domestic accident. All members wish him well in his recovery and careful rehabilita­tion which it is said will take several months.

Although Paul cannot attend Club meetings he is gallantly continuing to fulfil his Treasurer duties from home.

The next Committee Meeting will take place on Friday, August 25 at 7.30pm. This has been rearranged to enable final arrangemen­ts for the show to be fulfilled.

Broadlands Fun Day: Broadlands funday is happening at Maes yr Haul school on Saturday, September 2, from 1pm.

This great event is sponsored by Payton Jewell Caines Homes in associatio­n with Laleston Community Council.

There are lots of entertaini­ng rides for all ages and a marquee full of stalls. Entry fee is £3 per person but all rides are free. Homes in Broadlands will be getting a Fun Day flyer posted in the next week or so.

There is a competitio­n on the official Facebook page of the Broadlands Residents Hub committee page to win a family of 6 free entry too! More informatio­n in the next week or so.

Bob Cook Memorial Games: The annual Bob Cook Memorial Games took place in Swindon on Sunday, August 13 organised and supported by The Lions Clubs of District 105W.

The President of Bridgend Lions Club, Patrick Halliwell, and several members of Bridgend Lions Club joined the buses at 7.30am in the Dip Bryntirion which were filled with excited members of Penybont Gateway Club and Every Link Counts.

The weather was kind and the day consisted of field and track events including Mens and Ladies Discus, Javelin, Shot, Welly Throwing, Running, Relay, and Walking. A tremendous day was enjoyed by all and Bridgend’s ‘Gateway’ Olympians returned with 60 medals in all made up of 24 Gold , 22 Silver and 14 Bronze.

Every Link Counts achieved 12 Gold 13 Silver and 14 Bronze medals and all competitor­s must be congratula­ted.

Special congratula­tions for friend Robbie Vincey from Laleston who attends the Games every year and this time was pleased to win four Gold medals.

The date for next year’s games has already been booked in the County Ground at Swindon and will be August 12. had to be removed from the woodland.

It was then at the meeting that trustees and members decided to have another volunteer day after the summer holidays and to start afresh in the woodland on September 24 from 10am-12noon, all are welcome.

Community Council: The next meeting of the Newcastle Castle Higher Community will be held in September as there is no meeting in August.

Play and Community Playgroup: The playgroup is open to children from two to four years of age and is held from 9.15am-3pm in the afternoon from Monday to Friday during term time. Call 07813 392 464. cheese, butter and pickles at the event for a small charge of £3pp.

Pencoed may also have some spare places at the Official Evening on Wednesday, September 27. This will be in Pencoed Miners’ Welfare Hall starting at 6.30pm. There will be a Hog Roast followed by desserts.

There will also be entertainm­ent by Penybont Folk Dancers. Tickets cost £10 per person.

District Quiz League: Bridgend Quiz League is commencing it’s 45th season starting on September 4 at Tondu Railway Club with team registrati­on and a fun quiz, which is open to all, starting at 8pm – there will also be a buffet provided.

Porthcawl Truck Fest: The third Annual Porthcawl Truck Fest takes place on Salt Lake Car park on Saturday and Sunday September 2 and 3.

This is a charity event with monies raised going to local good causes, and last year there were more than 200 trucks on display.

The weather was good for the Carnival and the Lion’s Vintage Vehicle Day at the Rugby Field so here’s hoping for a fine weekend.

Lions Events in Porthcawl: Note that the Sandcastle Competitio­n rained off last Friday has now been reschedule­d for 10.30am on this Saturday, August 26. It is being held on Coney Beach in front of the Coney Beach Amusement Park. Entry is free and there are prizes in various categories.

Porthcawl Male Voice Choir Celebrity Concert: This year the concert will be held in The Grand Pavilion on Saturday, September 30 and the guest celebrity will be Mike Doyle. Tickets are available at the Grand Pavilion box office.

Porthcawl Rnli Charity Walk 2017: Another reminder that the 3rd Annual Porthcawl RNLI Charity Walk will take place on Sunday, September 10.

It starts from the RNLI Shop in Porthcawl Harbour at 11am and you can choose one of three distances.

The shortest walk is from the Lifeguard Station as far as Rest bay and return(approx 5km).

Or you can walk from the RNLI Station as far as Sker Point and return (approx 10km).

Or finally you can choose to walk on to the Kenfig Nature Reserve Centre and return (approx 15km.)

Sponsorshi­p Forms are available at the RNLI Shop and at The Boat House Fish Bar on the Esplanade.

Ty Hafan Rainbow Run: Anyone interested in entering this year’s Annual Ty Hafan 5K Rainbow Run can register on line or on the day.

Registrati­on starts at 11.30am on Saturday, October 7, in the Ty Hafen Event Village on the Promenade in front of the Coney Beach Amusement Park (CF36 5BT) here in Porthcawl.

Registrati­on starts from 11.30am, and the event commences at 1.30pm.

Open to all over the age of five years can enter but under 16s have to be accompanie­d by an adult.

You can either register as an individual for £13 or as a group for £10 per person with a minimum of five in a group.

Jennings Building: Isn’t it great that Jennings Building is now being gainfully used after being left to fall into disrepair over the last 30 or so years?

I don’t think the flats are occupied yet but certainly the Coffee shop seems to be busy already.
