King crowned champion in Tony Davies Stableford

GOLF: COED-Y-MWSTWR:

JAMES King crowned a fine display in winning the Tony Davies Bogey Stableford competitio­n with a score of five up.

One shot behind came Gareth Jones while on the three-up mark came Gareth Summerton (eagle on 13, three birdies and nine pars) and champagne Michael Perry (two birdies).

Glenn James signed for two-up to finish one blow in front of Clayton Landells, Steve O’Connell and Andrew Goss.

Meanwhile, Kenneth James swept to victory in last week’s Senior Stableford, shooting an astonishin­g 41 points to have two shots lopped off his handicap.

He overhauled longtime clubhouse leader Cliff Jones, who dribbled his way on to 40 points, with third-placed Steve Clift shooting 37 points.

A commanding par 36 score came from Richard T Commander to finish one shot in front of both Mike Davies and Tony Lang.

Senior Captain David B Ford-Williams entered the Sam Bevan snug with 34 points to finish one in front of six players – Jonny McEachen, Tony Powell, Member 191 Jimmy Blackball, Peter Ashman, putting genius Michael Joyce and Mal Brooks.

The biggest surprise was provided by big-hitting D R Stead, who punched an amazing 27 points on his toasty card. Though many felt new horizons beckoned for the feisty competitor, this score made them think otherwise.

Coed-y-Mwstwr Halletts took the home leg of their play-off match against Rhondda, 2.5-1.5.

There were wins for Peter Ashman and Paul Reed (3 & 2) along with Michael Jacques and Steve McAllen (7 & 5); Ross Haskins and Sammy Slennett halved while Matthew Carpenter and Jerry Devine suffered a 3 & 1 defeat.

GROVE:

MICHAEL Davies was the overall winner of Grove Seniors Open Day which attracted 170 competitor­s.

In overcast and damp conditions, the Grove member ran up a fine score of 40 Stableford points.

In category A (55 – 68 age groups) the winner was Steve Curtis (Grove) 39 points ahead of Peter Smith (Pyle & Kenfig) and Steve Williams (Mond Valley), who both scored 38 points.

Category B (69 years plus) was won by Joe Lacey (Grove) with a countback 39 points from John Porter (Wallasey) while third-placed John Richards (Mond Valley) got 37 points.

Nearest the line driving was Gwyn Jones (Creigiau) and longest drive on hole nine came from Tony Morris (Langland Bay).

Nearest the pin with a second shot into hole six was Grove star Steve Curtis.

Last week a storming round from Norman Rand and Terry Emlyn-Jones saw them win the Senior Section’s Grand Hotel Cup with 44 Stableford points, finishing three points clear of Leslie Fitzgerald and Philip Thomas.

Grove Seniors visited the Vale Resort for a club match – losing 4.5 – 3.5 defeat - and suffered a similar fate at the Brynhill club in Barry. But the aggregate score over the two matches with Brynhill was tied on eight apiece.

Tomorrow (Thursday) Grove Seniors head to Three Crosses to face Gower.

Meanwhile, Sue Bishop was the winner of Grove Ladies Medal Nine with a score of 89-14-75 from Gemma Fenton 99-16-83.

The following day, Medal 10 went to Jayne Jones with 92-18-74 in front of on the money Barbara Cash 115-34-81 and Victoria Ford 110-27-83.

LAKESIDE:

THE return of competitiv­e golf at the Lakeside club in Margam last Thursday saw big gun Nicky Walters shoot to victory with 38 Stableford points.

He went all guns blazing early on, firing birdies on holes two and three while seven pars also helped him outgun opponents.

Runner-up Bob Hazzard achieved par 36 (10 pars) while third-placed Bob Thomas finished like a steam train with a birdie on the home hole for a 33-point tally.

On the 32-point mark came Dennis Gould and Noel Jones; a further point back came Clifford Morris and Brian Channell with pop idol Cliff Richards on 30 points together with Wyn Richards.

Last Saturday, Ian Barnard strolled to victory in a Strollers competitio­n with 38 Stableford points.

The nine-handicappe­r’s winning card displayed a sweet birdie on hole 16 together with 12 pars.

Runner-up Bob Thomas got par 36 (seven pars) while George Kinsey and Andrew Colquhoun both entered the snug with 32 points.

ST MARY’S:

ST MARY’S Senior Section played a Stableford competitio­n. The very pleasant conditions attracted a field of 35 players and some very good scores were returned. In first place with a net score of 35 points was Section Treasurer, Owen Maund. Phil Hatton claimed second with 34 points and Steve Phillips completed the placings with 31 points.
