Bull charges to victory in Stableford competitio­n

GOLF:

MIKE Bull went on a charge last week to take a Midweek Yellow Box Stableford competitio­n with 36 points. On a tough day for scoring, par was enough to get the job done for Bull, who entered 10 pars on his card.

Runner-up Steve Jones – playing off an away handicap – registered a Tutu (twos on holes five and 14 along with a further birdie on 16) in a countback 35-point haul from Alan Howells (birdie on hole four).

Eleven pars were on the 34-point card of fourthplac­ed Michael Carter while Jonathan Vernon signed for the same score.

Five players were then on the 33-point level – R Sanderson, Geraint Davies, T C Underwood, Tony Webber and Matthew Williams.

The Division Two winner was John Ellis with 35 points, who finished one in front of three com- petitors – Charles John Davies, Martin Smith and Paul Porter.

And on Saturday owing to a strong wind only four players went under the card during a Yellow Box Stableford event that John Melville won with a countback 37 points.

His round contained a birdie on hole 13 and nine pars while recent winner Jonathan Vernon birdied holes six and 13 and got eight pars to claim second spot.

Par 36 was achieved by Nicholas Golunski (four birdies and five pars) and he finished two points in front of Jack Hayes, Graham Hughes and Glen Webber (two on hole 10).

Division Two was won by Richard Smith on countback 39 points from Ian Meredith, Martin Smith (34) and Martin Brand (33).

Last week the Senior Section staged a Medal competitio­n that former Bridgend Town cricketer Adrian Daniel was bowled over in winning with a score of 77-7-70. In a pol- ished display from the retired dentist, his low gross round contained 11 pars and seven bogeys.

Runner-up G Stephens went around in 103-27-76, and was followed on the scoreboard by Viv Sheppard 89-12-77 (two on hole 14), Dr Brian Dawson 86-8-78 (two on hole 10 and birdie on 13), Stephen Owen Thomas 9719-78 and G Fry 93-15-78 (two on the fifth hole).

PYLE & KENFIG:

A BIRDIE on the second hole led to Teri Ward last week lifting the Molyneux Cup with 36 Stableford points at Pyle & Kenfig.

One point back came Cheryl Western (birdie on 11 and 10 pars) while third-place Fauve Birch went birdie on holes eight, 11 and 17 in also hitting 35 points.

Claire Morris matched par on 11 occasions to also finish with 35 points from Ceri Mohajer on 34 and two 33-point scorers - Gwyneth Parsons and Rosamond Cooper (two on hole six).

On the Ladies scene, the Mary Nicholls Qualifier was won by Caroline E Tremlett and Julie Reade with 93-19.5-73.5 from Chris Gardner and Janet Roberts who signed for 109-31-78.

MAESTEG:

CLUB captain Jonathan Thomas took his Away Day event to the Manor House club in Castle Coombe with ex-St Mary’s captain Neil Channell taking the main plaudits on the back of a grand score of 42 Stableford points.

He had five points to spare over Gary Evans while countback 36 points favoured David Kehoe over Raymond Miller and Michael Howells.

The Team Prize went to Neil Channell, exclub profession­al Tom Davies, former Maesteg and Neath rugby star Jeffrey Bird along with Scott Davies who ran up 130 points. Longest drive was smoked by Kieran Sullivan and Chris Morgan was nearest the pin.

Ladies Captain’s Day organised by Mary Lee saw Menna Lewis lift the Carina Carey Cup on the strength of 34 Stableford points ahead of Pam Jones (31) and Margaret Jones (30).

The nearest the pin prize was scooped by Eirwen Humphreys and straightes­t drive went to Gill Phillips – a nine-hole event for newcomers was won by Collette Matchett.

John Kehoe was triumphant in the weekly Wayfarers competitio­n with 38 Stableford points, and following him on the scoreboard were Brian Thatcher (34) and Peter Williams (31).

The nine-hole tournament was won by Rob McGee with 18 points.

Finally, Maesteg Juniors beat their Pennard counterpar­ts 3-0 to qualify for the knockout stages of the Glamorgan County League. Thomas Hedley got the second best nett score in the Glamorgan County Junior Championsh­ips at Wenvoe Castle
