COED-Y-MWSTWR

-

THE CHAMPION golfer at Coed-y-Mwstwr for 2017 is Andrew Hill, who beat Elliot Williams, 2 & 1 in the final.

In the 36-hole final, Hill carded a 69 during the morning session to go into lunch five holes up.

And when play resumed, a birdie on the first hole extended the lead, leaving Williams with the proverbial mountain to climb.

But by the 30th home, fine putting from Williams saw the deficit cut to just one hole.

Williams just missed out on a birdie on hole 31 and when Hill went under the card on the uphill 32nd hole, the lead was back to two.

Pars were recorded on the par-five and Hill then missed a chance on the 33rd green to close out the match.

But with Williams failing to birdie the par-three penultimate hole, it left Hill with two putts from 30 feet for the championship.

Though the initial putt came to a halt four feet from the cup, the next putt went underground and Hill was champion.

But it was a shame there had to be a loser. as the final was played in great spirits.

The Silver Bowl was won by Lloyd Dowling, who just edged out Steve O’Connell.

Short game wizardry led to Dowling seizing the initiative and he opened up a three-hole lead.

Though O’Connell rallied, he went under 2 & 1, leaving Lloyd Dowling following in the footsteps of his brother Gary in picking up the Silver prize.

Owing to green maintenance, last week’s Senior Stableford was cancelled, and the summer season will now be rounded off next Tuesday with a Three Club & a Putter competition.

And following a meal, the Senior Section AGM will be staged in the clubhouse.

Finally, a room in the Coed-y-Mwstwr Hotel has been booked a week on Tuesday (October 24) for an EGM to decide on a planned clubhouse extension.

It’s the biggest decision the Bryn Road club will make since 2002 when members voted to go for the six additional holes that made it an 18-hole golf course.
