Town hall hub plans ongoing
A MULTI-MILLIONPOUND redevelopment of Maesteg Town Hall is moving forward as planned, Bridgend Council has confirmed.
The authority issued a statement after rumours circulated that it had failed in its bid to the European-funded Welsh Government Buildings of the Future programme.
The council has previously said it needs about £4m from that fund to transform the town hall into a cultural hub – which will controversially replace the indoor market with a library – and address the building’s structural problems.
It is understood that Bridgend Council was unsuccessful in securing a smaller amount from the Heritage Lottery Fund and will now resubmit its application.
The bid to Buildings of the Future is still being considered.
A council spokesman said: “The council and Awen can assure residents that our joint plans for this much-loved heritage building are very much ongoing, and a design team has been appointed and are currently carrying out detailed design work.
“In keeping with other transformational projects of this size and scope, we are applying to a number of sources for funding. Realistically, some bids are going to be more successful than others.
“We remain committed towards safeguarding and developing the future of Maesteg Town Hall and Maesteg Market.”
