LLANTWIT MAJOR ...... 1 ABERGAVENNY TOWN 0

A NINTH goal of the season from top marksman Rob Jones earned Llantwit Major all three points against gritty Abergavenny Town at Windmill Lane, writes Tony Poole.

And a sixth league win from 10 starts with three drawn led to the Windmillers rising to fifth place in the table.

Though they remain promotion hopefuls, sterner tests await Karl Lewis and his thoroughbreds ahead of Christmas festivities.

This Saturday they are away to old pals STM Sports while a week on Saturday they head west to take on Garden Village.

These will form strong indicators of their promotion credentials.

But it was all Llantwit Major early on with the Monmouthshire side finding it difficult to retain possession, and move the ball away from danger.

A fine Joshua Jones touchline dart and by-line cross only required a touch in front of goal and it would have been 1-0.

However, the Windmillers continued to press without making the breakthrough, and Rob Jones just failed to score on the end of a Connor Goldsworthy short-corner ploy.

A Goldsworthy shot was then only partially cleared, and somehow the ball didn’t go in following prolonged period of penalty area pinball.

A Kristian Smith ball hoofed into the box then caused Aber problems, ending in Jonny Fletcher shooting over the cross bar.

Home goalkeeper Jack Landsdown was provided with rare work on the halfhour mark – and eventually Llantwit Major got their noses in front in the 38th minute.

The goal that settled the issue stemmed from a Fletcher pinpoint pass that picked out Rob Jones close to the penalty area.

He went on to dink the advancing goalkeeper, and produce the only goal of a game that won’t linger in the memory.

During the second half, the Windmillers played keep ball and aided by an outstanding defence, Aber were shut out.
