BRIAN John swept to victory in the last Coed-yMwstwr Senior Section Stableford before Christmas.

Though the 25-handicappe­r failed to score on hole two, it was the only blemish on a card that totted up to par 36 points.

Two points back in a non-qualifying event came Trevor Duggan (five pars) along with Ada Asquith and former Senior Captain David B FordWillia­ms.

Next on the scoreboard came five finishers with 33 points – Russell Gower, Steve Clift, Irish star Philip Harrington along with regimental men Mal Brooks and George R Davis

But Dai (Maesteg) Thomas, who was bidding for a third win in five outings, had to settle for a disappoint­ing 32 points together with Michael Paddick and Michael Davies.

Six twos were recorded with Brooks holing out over the pond on number four and Barrie Delaney bagging one on the eighth.

The 11th hole provided Tony Lang and golfing aficionado Michael Parker with their moments in the sun while Jonny McEachen and hole-inone wizard Barrie Rowlands did likewise on the penultimat­e green.

Last Saturday, glasses were raised to thinking man’s golfer Paul Alexander after going bottoms up in the Bottle Trot event.

The 20-handicappe­r, who hits it miles, went birdie on holes three and 13, and won the day despite blobbing the ninth hole.

The victory was on countback over champagne Michael Perry who carded two birdies; 12 pars and four bogeys.

Third-placed Andy Dunn possessed a 39-point card containing a two on the eighth, but the downside came via three no-returns.

Six other players went under par – Gavin Rees, Rory O’Connell and Stephen Stock all shot 38 points – while on the 37-point mark came Jeff Harding, Huw Rodgers and Nathan Alexander.

Par 36 points came from eight players – Stephen Thomas, Luke Morgan, Stephen Witts, Barry Lewis, Julian Rudd, Matt Phillips, Andrew Goss and midweek winner Brian John.

Other twos came from Julian Rudd, Stephen Hesketh, Gareth Bodenham, Steve O’Connell and Matt Carpenter.
