Volunteers with charity in mind as they walk

- ABBY BOLTER abby.bolter@walesonline.co.uk

THE Barry and Bridgend units of the South Wales Police Youth Volunteers will be stepping out for mental health later this year.

They’re taking part in the Welsh1000walk and will trek from Barry Island to Porthcawl on April, 28.

It equates to 32 miles and they hope that every step they take will be raising money for the mental health charity Mind.

Setting the pace for the volunteers will be South Wales Police Sergeants Mark John and Angela Bennett.

Mark will lead the walk from Barry to Nash Point and Angela Bennet will be leading the way from Nash Point to Porthcawl.

Mark said: “We want to do our bit to support the great work that Mind do. In any given year one in four people will suffer a mental health problem and it is estimated that only 25% will receive the support they need. Mental health awareness is especially important, not least within organisations such as the police service where the demands of the job can really take its toll. Please sponsor us if you can and help us raise funds and awareness for this fantastic charity.”

A selection of 71 walks will take palce on Saturday, April 28. The walks will follow the inspiring Welsh coastal path including Anglesey. In addition, the historic Offa’s Dyke trail will be used that create walks all over Wales. Six Police Youth Volunteer Units from South Wales and Police Cadets from Gwent, Dyfed Powys and North Wales are also taking part.
