FOOTBALL PENCOED ATHLETIC ... 5 CARDIFF CORRIES ...... 1

MARK Brimble ended one of the longest goal droughts in his illustrious career in coming good during this landslide Pencoed Athletic victory over Cardiff Corries, writes Tony Poole.

The last time nimble Brimble hit the back of the net came during a 5-1 win at old pals AFC Butetown way back on May 2.

A sumptuous finish on the end of a delicious Richie Lewis pass got the monkey off his back, and it made the score 2-0.

Manager Mark Powell sent out the same side that just before Christmas battered table-topping Cardiff Draconians for an hour before suffering a slender 3-2 defeat.

Man- of- the- match Richie Lewis sent the Felindre Road boys in front early on from the penalty spot.

The Brimble goal led to a joyous jig from the Brimblettes ahead of former Bryntirion FC secretary Clive Layne, who was the match official, awarding them another penalty.

This time big Ben Treharne struck from the penalty spot and he netted again before the break – giving him seven strikes for the season – to make it 4-0 at the changeover.

That was a true reflection of a dominant firsthalf showing, but Pencoed then went right off the boil, and worse followed when captain Evan Price retired with a tight hamstring.

It led to Corries, who had a first-half goal refused for pushing, reducing the deficit to 4-1.

But Pencoed came again as Keegan Alexander, who returned from suspension, crossed for star man Lewis to also move on to a magnificent seven goals for the campaign.

“This was a welcome three points and a great start to the New Year for us,” said Pencoed chief Mark Powell.

“Five goals at home are always acceptable even though we went to sleep during the second half.’’
