A GROUP of budding primary school movie makers presented their film premiere last week that featured aliens, journeys into space – and chocolate.

Pupils from West Park Primary School in Nottage presented their creation Gravity is Not Chocolate to pupils and parents.

It followed “exciting and innovative” learning, which was accessed through a grant from Arts Council Wales.

The school’s deputy head teacher, Leeanne Juliff, said: “I have been amazed by the skills of the pupils throughout the project from the beginning where we interviewed our creative prac- titioners, to the end when they spoke so confidently of their learning journey to parents.”

The exercise was to develop pupils’ story writing, film making and ICT skills, and saw pupils work with a film maker and story teller.

A school spokesman said: “They have developed their research skills through identifying the difference between fact and opinion, asking questions, developing note taking and summarising skills.”

They developed a space story with a plot involving aliens, journeys into space and chocolate using animation techniques and green screen technology.

He added: “All who attended the film premier thoroughly enjoyed the performance. West Park were extremely proud of the children’s achievements and would love to be able to sustain projects like this for all our pupils every term.

“We hope to reach out to industries and our community to make this happen now our grant funding has ended.”

Emily, one of the pupils involved, added: “I loved the project. I was so proud when Jac spoke on the film set. I didn’t know how to film a story before but now I do.”
