SUMMER GOLF

-

SOUTHERNDOWN Golf Club last week via their Twitter account gave out hope that summer golf isn’t too far away.

Last Friday rare January sunshine provided a respite from the monsoon season and they pictured the sun going down on the ninth green.

But they too suffered last Sunday when the golf course was closed until after lunch through misty conditions.

Prolonged rain since the festive season has led to countless club competitions been cancelled.

And with many golfers not attending clubs, a domino effect has been triggered with takings over bars and club shops bunkered.

Of course it’s nothing new - as there have been countless wet winters of late – but this kind of weather only attracts diehard players to go out and contend with muddy conditions.

While most club golf is played on weekends, there is still plenty of midweek action via senior sections.

But since Christmas, Grove has been forced to cancel three senior events while Coed-y-Mwstwr, placed Cleevillians are a further nine points back.

So, without counting chickens, the Ravens are well placed to make it a promotion-winning campaign.

With the tip-top Bridgend defensive display in mind, a superb goalline clearance from Matt Wooster summed up team resolve.

And when Whitchurch did get a shot on target, Adrian Hibbert in goal was at his very best.

Two of the Bridgend goals came from short corners with Rhys Owen the man to register a pair of bull’s eyes.

The other Bridgend goal came from Gareth Coleman.

Next up for Bridgend is an away league fixture on Saturday with new cellar dwellers Hereford.

But having lost to then
