Choirs Rock St Mary’s Catholic Church for 20th Anniversary Celebrations: On Friday, January 26, St.Mary’s Catholic Church on Ewenny

Road, Bridgend, was filled to capacity for a special concert given by Rock Choir and their guest choir, Cor Tadau Trisant to commence a year of celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the building of the new church.

And what a special evening it was!

Led by the accomplished musician, Stephanie Bailey, Rock Choir opened the first part with ‘A Little Respect’ and were welcomed, with their Special Guests, by Fr. Tim McGrath.

This was followed by ‘History’ led by soloists Rhian and Sian Hills. Rock Choir then delivered their seminal Don’t Stop Believin’, ‘Halo’ and then the upbeat ‘Uptown Girl’, which had the audience singing along before joining in fully to sing ‘Calon Lân’ as Rock Choir moved offstage to make way for Cor Tadau Trisant.

They showed us their range with ‘You Raise Me Up’ which held the audience in thrall before some light-hearted numbers including ‘I’m the King of the Swingers’ (aka ‘I Wanna be Like You’) to take us to the interval.

Rock Choir opened the second part of the evening with ‘You’re The Voice’ followed by the moving ‘Hallelujah’ and then ‘Love is on the Way’ led by soloist: Tracey Veseybefore the audience again joined in with a rousing ‘Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer’. During this a hundred members of Rock Choir again seamlessly exited the stage to make way for Cor Tadau Trisant who sang some jaunty and very entertaining numbers for their second guest slot.

Rock Choir again took the stage for ‘Mary’s Prayer’ and ‘Walking On Broken Glass’, the latter led by soloist Lynne Lewis.

After some words of appreciation Rock Choir were joined on stage by Cor Tadau Trisant for a wonderful finale singing ‘Something Inside So Strong’.

The evening was variously described by audience members as they left as Wonderful …, rousing …, very uplifting …, fantastic …, superb!!!

If you haven’t seen either of these choirs just Google them!

Craft Fayre: 3rd Bridgend Scouts are holding a Craft Fayre at the Scouts Hall, Bryntirion (a large spacious hall) on Sunday, March 4. Doors open at 10am and close at 2pm. The fee is £10 per table. Laleston Gardening Club: We are already speeding into the new year and I would like to pass on my thanks to Patrick Stevens, secretary and Paul Jones, chairman for keeping us all up-to-date with the club’s news and activities.

At the committee meeting held on Friday, January 19, the chairman Paul Jones reflected on the sad events that had taken place since Christmas. There had been a joint funeral of Glan and Carys Hathaway on January 10 and the funeral of Frank Bradford on January 16.

These three individuals had been long standing and prominent members of the club and will be sadly missed. Both funeral services took place at St David’s Church, Laleston and were very well attended. Donations in lieu of flowers have been sent to ABMU Health Board, to benefit wards 9 and 19 at The Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, in memory of Glan and Carys and to the MS Society in memory of Frank.

Condolences had also been sent to the family of Lionel Mason, a popular member whose funeral took place on January 12.

The Ladies Section of the club held a mini auction at Cliff Cottage on January 23 and raised £300 that will be added to the donations mentioned above.

On a happier note the next lecture of the club will take place on Monday, February 12, when Sheena Crossley will return to the club to give a talk about her own potted history in horticulture and her 30 favourite plants. This promises to be an enjoyable evening as Sheena has been visiting the club for many years and is always informing and amusing.

We are always pleased to give prospective members a warm welcome and with the support of Dave Thomas we now have an effective PA system, so everyone will be able to hear what is being said clearly. Why not come along and hear Sheena’s talk at 7.30pm on Monday, February 12 at Cliff Cottage, next to St David’s Church in Laleston, we look forward to meeting you.

As we head towards spring the club’s reasonably priced, not for profit, members shop (The Cabin) has now reopened after the winter break and will be open between 10am and noon on a Thursday and Saturday morning.

The shop is run by the club’s ‘Seeds-man’, Dennis Roberts who will be on hand to inform about the wide range of products on offer and give friendly and practical advice.

Plans are already being made for the club’s sixth annual plant sale and coffee morning which will be held on Saturday, May 5. Along with the club’s annual show held in September, it is the biggest event in the club’s calender and is the culmination of over four months planning and preparation.

Sian James and a small group of dedicated club members use their green houses and window sills to carefully cultivate the wide range of plants that will be on sale. This year the club is delighted to have enlisted the support of members Gerwyn and Linda Thomas, who, despite living in Ogmore Vale have become keen and active committee members of the club. They will be using their large greenhouses to cultivate a considerable number of plants for the sale supported by experienced gardeners Joyce and Richard Pegg.

The plant sale has grown in popularity since it was introduced five years ago and anyone requiring competitively priced, quality bedding plants, vegetable plants and tomato plants will not be disappointed. Westward Community
