BARRY TOWN UTD ....... 2 PENYBONT .................... 1

A LATE goal condemned Penybont to a disappointing defeat last Sunday on the Barry Town 3G pitch, writes Tony Poole.

Having gained backto-back league victories over Llangyfelach, the Bont girls headed to Jenner Park in a buoyant mood.

And although Barry were made of sterner stuff, the visitors certainly deserved to exit with at least a point.

Despite feeling one degree under, Natalie Rees filled the problematic goalkeeping role, but the Bont front two of Briony DeMott and Ashton Morgan were a constant thorn in the flesh.

Morgan clattered the woodwork early on and DeMott also suffered a similar fate, as Barry thanked their lucky stars not to have fallen behind.

Bont misfortune continued as cricket star Rebecca Struthers ran the ball against the cross bar with a header while Ria Coates, Megan Jones and Sara Jones all shaved posts.

A good Natalie Rees save denied Barry before the break, but it was goal-less at half time – much to Bont astonishment.

But they did get their just desserts on the restart when DeMott went clear; headed over the goalkeeper and deposited the ball in an unprotected net.

However, the lead didn’t last long because in the 65th minute a long ball ploy resulted in Kate Spargo making it level-pegging.

That was a setback for the Bont girls, but they kept their peckers up and again found their rhythm.

But it was Barry who got the winner from a corner with Becky Cornelius making the most of a Naomi Coulson assist.

During final knockings Bont pressed hard for an equaliser – forcing a succession of fruitless corners – but Barry just managed to cling on to their slender advantage.

“I can’t believe we lost that game, but the effort the girls put in was tremendous,” said Bont boss Mark Evans.
