COED-Y-MWSTWR

BARRIE ROWLANDS was once more in vogue last week following the latest Senior Stableford competition at Coed-y-Mwstwr.

His hole-in-one on the eighth green two years ago won him almost as much fame as golfing icon Dai Revlon-James over the pond on number four almost 10 years back.

But this time Rowlands traded in pars and not aces with four of them going down on his toasty card during an amazing round that saw him run up 43 Stableford points.

His chum Gerald Howe simply couldn’t believe what was unfolding in front of him, as putt after putt was sunk with monotonous ease.

And from the Rowlands point of view, none of the froth was taken off his celebratory half of shandy, as it was a non-qualifying event.

This means the former football star remains a 26-handicap bandit, and is set over the coming month to create more mayhem out on the Bryn Road golf course.

He didn’t even have to look over his shoulder to see how the 47 other starters were performing, as binoculars were required to see Graham Gardner attempting to dig deep.

Gardner eventually planted an agricultural 38 points on the scoreboard, but was no match on the day for bandit Barrie.

A two on the 11th hole allowed golfing aficionado Michael Parker to pen 37 points on his card for third spot while three players all signed for par 36 – R T Commander, Jonny McEachen and regimental George R Davis.

They were followed on the scoreboard by 35-point men in Michael Davies, financial wizard John Rogers, Brian Austin and Clive Dyke.

But two big-hitters finished well down the field with Dai Maesteg-Thomas limping in to the Samuel Bevan snug with 32 points, and top golf retailer D R Stead with a steady 25.

Four other putts for two found the bottom of cups – on the fourth green it was down to William Jones, Jonny McEachen and Rocky Raybould, and on the eighth Brian Austin achieved the feat.

Last Saturday, 12 teams were involved in an Irish Team Scramble with victory going to Matthew Carpenter, Luke Morgan, Stephen McAllen and Julian Rudd with 61-5.6 = 55.4.

Runners up on 63-6.8 = 56.2 were Andrew Goss, Ross Haskins, Lee Reed and Stephen J Reed while third spot was occupied by Jon-Paul Lewis, Kelvin Roberts, Steve Terrett and Lionel Williams via 63-5.5 = 57.5.

Fourth place went to Lloyd Dowling, Dave Ellis, Michael Green and Michael Perry with 63-4.4 = 58.6.
