FC PORTHCAWL ........... 4 MARGAM YOUTH CENTRE ......................... 2

FC PORTHCAWL steadied a rocking boat in coming from two goals down to pip Margam Youth Centre in this Premier Division encounter at Rest Bay, writes Tony Poole.

The Green Machine used a 3-0 home loss the previous week to Gwynfi United as a wake-up call, but there were some sleepless nights before they bedded a seventh league victory of the season.

Margam shot into a two-goal lead, as the home defence took 40 winks and Jay Evans shot them in front.

And it got worse before getting better when Bradley Lane headed past home goalkeeper Brett Davies.

Porthcawl chief Jon McCarthy was seen scratching his head, but a tale of woe turned to joy when Sam McCarthy turned his marker and pulled a goal back just ahead of half time.

That sowed the seeds of doubt in Margam minds, and the return of Joshua Moore was another big factor in the recovery process.

And the introduction of Jordan Pugh from the bench also impacted, as he headed home a Joe McCarthy free kick.

That made it all square on 2-2 and it wasn’t long before they got their noses in front from a pinpoint Karl Cornock through ball.

Joe McCarthy cottoned on to it and the club’s top scorer duly c ollected a 15th goal of the campaign.

Any thought of Margam recovery then floundered on a Rest Bay rock built around William Owen, Matt Laverty and Evan Jones.

And they rounded off the best comeback of the season when Karl Cornock knocked a screamer into the top corner to move on to the three-goal mark this winter.

And despite finishing the game with just 10 men – big Ben Collins picked up a head wound – this was a more gratifying Green Machine showing.

This Saturday FC Porthcawl challenge Bryn Rockets at Rest Bay in the Port Talbot & District League Open Cup.
