Teen swims four miles in fundraiser
A FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD boy has swum 256 lengths – the equivalent of four miles – to raise more than £2,000 for Cancer Research.
Morgan Sweet decided to undertake the challenge because he felt he had not gone far enough in a previous charity swim.
The Bridgend County Swim Squad member swam non stop for more than three hours at Pencoed pool, even clocking his quickest time of 33 minutes in his last mile.
He was supported throughout his swim by mum Adele, dad Craig and sisters Ceira and Arianna.
Morgan, who is also training for his third dan black belt in Tang Soo Do, raised a total of £2,124.
The Pencoed Comprehensive pupil also plays rugby for his school and local rugby club where, for the season ending 2017/18, he was the club’s top try scorer and received a message of congratulations from Wales and Lions legend Jamie Roberts.
Pencoed Comprehensive head teacher Edward Jones said: “As a school we are extremely proud of Morgan’s charity fundraising endeavours through his swimming.
“He personifies our school ethos of thinking of others.”
Morgan’s dad Craig said: “We would like to extend our thanks to our work colleagues and friends who all contributed generously in helping Morgan raise so much money. Also, special thanks to Pencoed and Garw Tang Soo Do, Bridgend County Swim Squad, Pencoed Primary School and Pencoed Comprehensive for all supporting and assisting Morgan raise a fantastic amount of money.
“Also, thank you to Tesco Bridgend, who provided the refreshments for Morgan for his swim, and also a big, big thank you to the staff at Halo leisure centre Pencoed who helped Morgan by providing the pool and ensuring Morgan had a lane all to himself and Sophie for her vocal encouragement.
“Last but not least Adam Jones, Richard Hibbard and Ollie Griffiths, all of who Morgan acknowledges as great rugby players, who all took time to send Morgan personal messages of support. These were of great inspiration and provided all the motivation needed to complete this selfless endeavour.”
