ATHLETICS & SWIMMING

-

ATHLETICS suffered like other sports last weekend with many events becoming victims of the cold weather, writes Tony Poole.

Despite Porthcawl getting off fairly lightly with regard to snow, underfoot conditions were icy, making it far too dangerous to hold the 256th staging of 5k Parkrun.

A similar course of events unfolded in Maesteg with their 5k Parkrun a non-starter and in Newbridge Fields were Bridgend Junior 2k Parkrun was a similar victim

The final event on the Gwent Cross Country League calendar in Bristol was also called off.

However, one local club, Pencoed Tri Club, did taste some competitive action last weekend – and it came in the swimming pool.

The Welsh Long Course Masters Swimming event was staged last weekend in Swansea and it resulted in a record-breaking day for the Pencoed club.

Christopher Goulden and Andrew Martin registered record times in their age groups in the 1500m category.

And Geertie Van Keulen along with Jonny Burnett also carded superb times in the Welsh Masters event.

All in all lots of medals and records were broken during a memorable day for Pencoed Tri Club.

It ended in Martin bringing home four gold medals; setting two Welsh records and recording three personal best times.

And Burnett picked up a gold medal, two silvers and a bronze in another outstanding performance from a Pencoed Tri Club member.
