A BRIDGEND school pupil has gone up against the best young musicians from south and west Wales.

Flautist Samuel Finch, from Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School, was runner-up in the district final of the Rotary Young Musician competition.

Held at Islwyn High School in Blackwood, the event saw harpist Eve Price, sponsored by the Rotary clubs of Aberdare, Llantrisant and Rhondda, take first place.

Samuel had won a place in the event by winning at Porthcawl club level and then at the area heats.

He was up against seven other area winners from the 68 clubs.

Reprising his winning pieces, Poulenc’s Sonata for Flute and Piano 1st Movement and Bach’s Flute Sonata in E major 1st Movement, Samuel came so close to repeating his earlier success.

A spokesman for the Ro- tary Club of Porthcawl said: “Samuel’s achievements so far have helped him to hone his musical skills to a high level of musicianship and should be congratulated on his performance at the competition. Rotary in Porthcawl would like to wish him luck in future competitions.”
