VARSITY MATCH

-

FREE admission is on offer this week for golf fans at Royal Porthcawl during the staging of the 129th Varsity Golf Match.

Cambridge University will be looking to halt eight successive Oxford University victories when these age-old rivals tee it up on Friday while play spills over into Saturday with the singles.

It’s the sixth occasion for Royal Porthcawl to host the oldest amateur event in golf with Cambridge 64-57 to the good on the all-time head to head.

However, the last time the event was held in Rest Bay back in 2010, it triggered the winning streak for the Dark Blues.

It left them seven points shy of Bridgend, but Leominster still have to visit Yate in their final game on Saturday.

In De Cymru One, promoted Bridgend A cruised to a 5-1 victory over Neath at Pencoed Comprehensive School.

With one remaining match – away tonight (Wednesday) to Swansea City A – they have a league record showing 13 wins and three draws from 19 completed fixtures.

That gives them 42 points and they only trail champions Whitchurch C by four points.

There was a further victory for the club in De Cymru Two with Bridgend B triumphing 3-0 at Llan & Caerphilly to remain in fifth spot.
