Meanwhile, the magnificent sum of £16,000 was last week raised at a club fund-raising luncheon.

The event – organised by club president Derrick King and last year’s club captain Paul Porter – was due to be staged back in March but was delayed by the march of the “Beast from the East”.

Rugby buff and raconteur Phil Steele acted as master of ceremony with the money raised going to the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.

Out on the golf course, the latest Hanner Ffordd event was won by T Grant on the strength of a par round of 36 Stableford points.

One point back came two players – Keith Townrow and Raymond Jones – with Barrie Davies and C E Morris both extracting 34 points out of their rounds.

The Ladies Section held a first Weekend Stableford competition of the season with victory going to Ali Churchouse.

A birdie on the 11th hole allied to five pars moved her on to a winning score of 35 points, and the victory was by a point over Helen Calvert, who was playing off an away handicap.

Third place on 30 was occupied by Janet Booth while Alaitz Zubikarai shot two birdies and seven pars on her 30-point card.
