COED-Y-MWSTWR

-

SENIOR star Philip Davies took a May Stableford event last Saturday at Coed-y-Mwstwr, shooting 40 points.

The former Welsh RU referee whistled in a putt for two on the eighth green and birdied the 14th while matching par on seven occasions.

Runner-up Jonny Witts was two points arrears, and he birdied the 15th hole and got 11 pars.

Third-placed Robert Jones signed for 38 points, as did Daniel Morgan, and a further point back came Sean Boga-Lake and Stephen McAllen.

Par 36 points was then achieved by five players – Steve Gillett, Jamie Brown, Lionel Williams, Gary Dowling and Chris Hayward.

Highlight in the twos came from Chris D Webb who recorded a Tutu (twos on holes 11 and 17) on a 28-point card.

Meanwhile, it now almost goes without saying that more wet conditions led to a truncated turnout last week for the Senior Stableford competition.

With some big guns yet to come out of hibernation, the coast was clear for Michael Paddick to storm home with a toasty 39 points (four pars).

West Wales star Eifion Evans was the unfortunate player to miss out on number-crunching while Past Senior Captain David B Ford-Williams entered the Samuel Bevan snug with 37 points.

The splendid card of the ex-Ford executive included a birdie on the home hole and six pars only to rue a blob on hole 15.

Big shot DR Cannon fired 35 points, as did Russell Gower and Philip Weston, while financial wizard John Rogers signed for 34 points. Disputing eighth place on 33 points were Dai Maesteg-Thomas and John Dymond, who at last displayed some traditional sparkle.

Once more D R Stead was in steady form on 28 points while the only twos of the day came on the eighth green from runnerup Evans and a classic Dai Maesteg effort on the penultimate hole.

In a Betty Hicks qualifier, victory on 35 points went to Rebecca Roberts and Stuart Taylor from Caroline E Tremlett and her husband Clive (34) and Nicola Hopkins and Gary Dowling (33).

An Australian Spoons competition was won by Jill Davies and Julie Davies on 36 points, and they finished three points clear of two pairings – Meg Allen and Victoria Brooks along with Sian Hooper and gill Osborne.
